the fuel filter is not in the tank,the fuel pump might be thats why you need the haynes repair manual to see where these items are located,fuel filters are usualy outside the tank on the fuel line and the fuel pump might be able to be accessed under your back seat or trunk,but you would need the manual to know for sure or look it up on a search engine
i have ford focus ghia 2.0 2002 model and i have problem with the fuel pump sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.. when i fill the tank petrol pores out, the pipe next to the filter also comes out, how do i fix the problem?
componet located directly behind the tank ? evap canister ! Do you know how to test automotive electrical ? How to read an use a electrical wiring diagram ? Use a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter ? Do you know what a FPDM is fuel pump driver module (computer) Your best bet take it to a qualified repair shop or dealer ?

Your problem is the pump pick up in the tank is either broken or it has been bent up at some time, and it should be almost touching the bottom and yours would be about 2or3" up so when its still 1/4 full you cannot pick it up .
So take out the pump and fix the problem, or take into the garage and tell them what to do ..
NOT unless you have a faulty gauge sitting on 1/4 and it is EMPTY.
But thats one of the two problems it can be .. Have a goodday Ron
