How do I tell if 4-wheel drive is working?

I bought a used 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and don't have a owner's manual. I need to know if my 4-wheel drive is working. There's not a light that comes on and, though that would be helpful, I need further proof that the low gear ratio actually kicks int - plan to drive on a beach...

Locate a dirt parking lot or field and engage the 4wd. Make a slow tight turn and you should feel some resistance while turning as the wheels dig in and fight one another causing the steering wheel to shake somewhat too. Do not attempt this on pavement or damage may occur. If you can turn freey and not notice any difference then when your in 2wd its likely not working.

SOURCE: Service 4 wheel drive

The service 4 wheel drive light comes on because there's a problem. The biggest causes of this I've seen are a software glitch in the final drive control module which the dealer can fix by reprogramming and the other is usually the electric actuator on the front axle housing. The only light that comes on by a timer is the one that says, "perform service" in your overhead console or odometer.

In my 2009 jeep grand Cherokee there is no 4 Ed shifter. Is pressing the "ESP" button engaging the 4wheel drive?

On the Jeep models, ESP means electronic stability program which is the same as traction control.
There are 3 different versions of four wheel drive on Jeep Grand Cherokees with the base version being all wheel drive.
Your owners manual should tell you which version you have and how it operates.

What grade of transmission oil do I use for a 2003 jeep grand cherokee crd

The obvious answer to that would be to look in your Owner's Manual.
If you do not have an Owner's Manual, you can get one at:
http://www.jeep.com/en/owners/manuals/

The service manual lists two types depending on which engine your vehicle is equipped with:

4.0L Engine requires ATF Plus 3 or ATF Plus 3 Type 7176
4.7L Engine requires ATF Plus 4 or ATF Plus 4 Type 9602

Hello Debra Russ,
U may locate oil filter 4 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2 way's.

1.) Open 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Glove Box, remove the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee owners Manual from glove box. Open owners manual to index page, locate oil filter page.

2.) Secure 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee from moving fowards or backwards by blocking wheels in front and back which will NOT allow movement of said 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Hand said average person an average shop light with an average wallmart brand soft white light bulb, light bulb will bo out very soon so move to next step ASAP. view engine while calling out all massive oil leaks INCLUDING a dirty oil caked oil filter.

Congradulations!
You found it when a black oil droplet drips from the oil filter into said average oil filled hair of said average person!

How can i use the 4 x 4 in my 2000 grand cherokee laredo (6 cyl) i dont have the owners manual and i dont know how to use my 4x4 on snow or something like that

With the Jeep in park, move the left shifter to 4 wheel drive. Proceed to put right shifter into drive, proceed to drive. Only use 4wheel drive when neccessary...ie...snow, mud, use 4 wheel lo in steep incline or when really bogged down.

Hope this helps
