2002 mercury mountaineer stalling and does not restart

Started stalling when put into either drive or reverse. Does not want to restart unless you hold the gas pedal fully depressed. Then it takes several tries to get it started. Runs and accelerates fine when not in gear, but, as soon as it's dropped in it dies.Plenty of fresh gas in the tank, maintained regularly with oil changes at 3000 miles ect.

truck would run fine till got warm and would die when put in gear "drive or reverse" the temp. sensor was bad which was telling the comp. the truck was over heating and would kill it so no further problems would happen...15 dollar fix hopes this helps others

SOURCE: engine stalls after cold start-up & release from high speed idle

I had a similar problem.  I found the filter cartridge below the pcv valve had carboned up, and after the crank case pressurized, oil was forced out the pcv supply line to the throttle body.  The idle air control valve solenoid got oil in it and caused my problem, but only when it was cold.  The pcv cartridge is accessed by removing the pcv valve and the rubber fitting that the pcv valve mounts in.  It can then be fished out with a pick set, and it is a pain because you can't see it, but you can get you hand back there.  I hope this helps you.

SOURCE: '00 Mercury GM - oil all ran out, engine seized - runs poorly now

Your problem is that you ran the engine without oil. In doing so, you damaged most (if not all) the bearings in the engine. There is nothing you can do to make this engine better except to do a complete rebuild. Bad bearings will result in extra internal friction. Thus engine will run terrible, probably knock, have less power, and use more gas.

2002 Mercury Mountaineer or 4.6 runs like a dream but I don't know where we're start stalling and bucking and eventually will quit don't understand it pains all plugs with coils

Engine light on? If so, have it scanned for free at Auto Zone. Get codes only. Sounds like you cat. converters are stopped up. When this happens the engine can't breathe so it shuts down.

I have a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer that runs perfect while in park or while driving. When stopped or put in reverse it shakes and stalls.

Is the check engine light on? Mountaineers are bad about developing vacuum leaks which will lean the engine out and cause it to stumble at idle while in gear. Check for p0171 and p0174 codes.

My 2002 mercury mountaineer have no problem going forward but it seen like when i put it in reverse the back wheel lock and it out out a funny smell

It sounds like you have a loose brake shoe inside one of your rear axle brake drums. You will have to remove the rear wheels and brake drums to find out for sure.

When i put the car in drive it wont move an when i try to back up it wont move i have a mercury mountaineer

I'm sorry to say that you will either have to rebuild the transmission or replace it. All transmissions will start out in 1st. gear when put in drive. Oddly enough this is also the same gear that is used when you are in reverse. please let me know if you need help with anything else.

You may have to shift it out of 4x4 then reverse several feet for it to disengage.
