If it is a petrol engine, it could be the MAF (Mass Air Flow) is broken. A code reader will show this. If it is a diesel engine, it may be a burst intercooler or air hose to/from the intercooler

Black smoke from the exhaust is an indication of the engine running too rich. Probably bad fuel injection system.

White smoke means a coolant leak, check it and repair before to overheating your engine.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

Testimonial: "thanx ZJ. :-) Yea I read about some similar situations online yesterday here and other places. I appreciate your opinion and believe your right. i got some block sealer and will carefully follow its instructions. The process is to warm the engine till the heater is blowing warm air with the heater all the way up Only problem is my heater doesnt blow warm air only cold to luke. so ill have to assume its warm over the coarse of a few minutes. then shut the engine off and drain the radiator. then fill it with water again and again till its clear water then drain it empty. then with three quarts of water mix the block seal and dump it in the radiator and turn the car on immeadiately then etc as the instructions say. If this works I just scored a nice car for $800 and my white smokd problem will be gone"

3.9 ltr V-6 running very rich, acts like it is choking out when trying to accelerate and blows black smoke. Is this a fuel problem?

Yes, the engine is being overfuled if blowing black smoke. Possible internal leak of fuel pressure regulator. Possible sticking/stuck EGR valve. Possible computer supplying more fuel due to a sensor supplying false information. A scan tool will be required to determine if one or more sensors is supplying erratic info

My 325i is smoking alot

Depending on what color it is, you could have to much fuel, or a coolant leak, or oil in your engine.

Blue typically means Oil
White usually means coolant
black smoke usuall means fuel.
