My jeep keeps overheating the overflow will boil sometimes.......also some times the heater does not work..............has a new thermostat and stop leak fixed it for a while we thought.........now its overheating again when i start the car it sorta knocks or shakes then dies.....
The reason it getting hot when stopped is the fan relay is out thus not turning the cooling fan on,this is a time consuming job,the relay is located on the passenger side tip of the frame behind the headlight,the grill,headlights,bumper,and tip of the front fender has to be loosened up to get to it.
The relay is about 70.00 or so,the engine cools down when you drive as you are forcing air through the radiator to cool it down,as for the heater issue probably caused by boiling the anti freeze out ,
To make sure the engine is ok do a compression check to verify the headgasket and heads are ok,as for smelling the sweet smell which is antifreeze probably due to overheating and pushing the fluid out of the cap or tank.
The head gasket is the obivious solution. You may want to try putting a water pump on it as if this were your problem it would be a heck of alot cheaper than head work..
I hate to be the barer of bad news but it sounds like you have a blown head gasket or worse. Check the oil, does it look like butter? Water in oil. Forget about trying to drive it, have it towed to a shop.
Yup I hate to say it, but head gasket at the least, probably head now too.
The coolant has to be going somewhere if your constantly refilling it. If there is no visible leak under vehicle or, engine area, then it's probably going out the exhaust. Have a garage or rad shop do a pressure test on your cooling system & compression test on engine if necessary after cooling system test. Some rad shops have a dye that they add to coolant, then run the engine & with a black light can see the dye coming out the tailpipe, or wherever suspected problem is. Yes if the rad is plugged, and or fan not working properly or at all, that has to be fixed either way, and would be a good place to start. If your REAL lucky, that's all it will need, but by the sounds of it, be prepared for worse.
Get that rad fan problem fixed first, and make sure coolant is topped up & system is free of any air by running with cap off & heat on for 2 or 3 cycles of rad fan on, & off, before you put cap back on. Have a look at "Simidrm45844" reply, for where relay is located for the fan. Seeing how it sounds like a little work, I'd double check fan fuse etc first, and if there is a spot where you can safely probe fan wires for 12v power when temperature is reached where it should be coming on, then I'd certainly try that. If temp gauge goes up over normal, and no power at wires on fan, then you definately need to get to that relay to check for power in & out of it.This may not fix your overall problem, but by the sound of it, it may buy you some time.

Overheating with knocking and shaking is a very good chance that you have water/Anti freeze in your oil and that would be a blown heat gasket or cracked head or water jacket.(check oil filler cap and dip stick for creamish white reside . That will also explain the constant over heating. In my opinion you need at least a head job or may need to rebuild or replace motor. Good Luck

ok it all started one night i didnt realize it was over heating and the overflow boiled over............we did small things like new radiator cap new thermostat put stop leak in it one time just incase.....it has not done it in a while now all the sudden its doing it again....i mean it will be almost out of radiator fluid so i have to add more and more so it has to be leaking i guess also i think it could be a issue with the fan when i am stopped like going through the drive thru it keeps hot and check gauges lights come on but if i start driving and the faster i go the better it cools down and goes off....its a electric fan...but now the fluid keeps getting low and get hot kinda shakes and dies
its smells very sweet all the time thats all the smell it has
like for sure...its not the fan or water pump or anything
ya if i start driving it cools down as long as there is fluid in it it keeps running outta fluid like oncea month or something not all the time...just when i sit still with the car running it overheats

I suspect this might be a headgasket leak it would explain the hard starting. What color is the coolant in the overflow? Does it smell like oil?
Why was stop leak used ? How many times did it overheat, and how hot did it get? Knocking & shaking when started, sort of makes me nervous! Lots of damage may have occurred. Give us a brief history of when this all started, & where your at with it now.In the meantime, make sure you top up the rad, turn your heater on & run vehicle from cold, to bleed air out of system, and allow your rad fan to come on when required, as in normal operating temperature 2 or 3 times before you put cap back on rad. Keep an eye on gauge while doing this to make sure fan comes on before it overheats.
