My 2004 Prius has a rattling metallic sound on acceleration. It is coming from the top of the engine on the passenger side. Does anyone know what this can be?

My 2004 Prius started making a metallic rattle sounds at about 140k miles that was noticeable at idle and at speeds up to 30 or so MPH. As time has gone by the rattle has worsened and could be quite loud. It almost sounded like the engine was falling apart - but the car continued to run fine. Turns out this rattle was caused by a failing water/coolant pump. Replacing the water pump completely fixed the rattle noise on my 2004 Prius.

Does the car make this sound when the car has just been turned off and engine is still hot? Lightly push the car back and forth while it's in park. Does it still make that sound?

SOURCE: Rattling Coming from Engine At low RPM (stopped) and when accl.

If this sounds like a tin can rattle it is likely a loose heat shield on top of the catalytic converter. They come loose after time and corrosion take their toll.

I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado. Upon acceleration there is a rattling sound coming from the engine on the passenger side. it also happen when rolling in reverse and the brakes is applied.

it may just be the heat shield on the muffler, they are held on with tack welds that break easily. when the truck is cool crawl under it and look around the muffler and catalytic converters for a loose heat sheild.

Loud squeaking and rattling when you accelerate after a stop

Is the underside rusty? If so, take it to a qualified welding and autobody repair shop to have new metal welded on.

Your symptoms sound like the engine or transmission mounts may have deteriorated.

1994 toyota pickup rattles at low speeds (~15-19 mph).

Check for loose heat shields the cover the exhaust. I find this is the source of many rattles. They are made of sheet metal and if they are not clip or tightened down the low vibration frequency when the car is running at slow speed will cause them the hit the exhaust pipe/ front mainfold.

There is a rattling noise when the car is idling. when I accelerate it quits.

there are two things that cause this, one is the front engine pulley comes apart, this is very loud and comes from passenger side of engine, the next is the catalytic converter heat shield is broken.
