When the engine gets hot enough to stop the A/C from working.. you do have some issues,.. When the thermostat was replaced, was the entire coolant system reverse flushed and cleaned out? If no, its time for a full reverse flush and clean, new thermostat and coolant!
Sometimes when you open cooling system, air gets in, it can cause problems with temp gage.
How hot does it get in degrees F? Is the coolant boiling over? Are you losing coolant? Use a non-contact infra red temp gun to take engine temp, At least we will have a degrees F reading. Most temp gages say hi or lo, cold or hot. I don't know about yours?
Can you check for combustion gases in the coolant?
what motor? i have a dodge ram 4x4 with a 5.9 and the thermostat is rated at 195. if you havent noticed any coolant loss, its not your heater core. try bleeding the system (starting the car with the radiator cap off, and then filling with antifreeze after the thermostat opens up) because sometimes air caught in your system will do that.
have the ECT checked, Engine coolant temperature,lets the computer know whether it should push more fuel thru for cold mornings , the sensor could be telling the computer that your engine temp is 75 degrees,means less fuel being pushed
sadly it sounds like you have a blown head gasket...Does the coolant smell like exhaust? I hope you don't but, everything points in that direction. Try bleeding the coolant system.
If you havent already, leave the radiator cap off of your radiator while you start the vehicle. Be sure the engine is cold, you could get hurt if not because the coolant will build up pressure. If the cap is off, no pressure will build. Wait a while for the vehicle to heat up, look in the opening, and see if the coolant is flowing. If so, could be a bad fan, or gummed up radiator......if NOT your turbine on your water pump could be bad, OR, by chance, the thermostat is not working.
make sure engine is cool then drain coolant by opening the drain plug at bottom of radiator. remove cap from radiator so coolant will continue to drain and when coolant is down enough to pull off upper radiator hose at intake then close drain, then remove two bolts at coolant housing and remove thermostate. clean gasket material from intake and housing and replace with new gasket and thermostate tighten bolts install hose fill rad with coolant water mix 50/50 and run engine with heat on floor until gets hot and you see coolant flowing in rad, install cap
a bad heater core will just leak. it could leak alot. do you ever smell antifreeze? check the coolant level. it can get pretty low before it will overheat. the thermostat should be ok but there could be corrosion. when you had the water pump replaced was the cooling system flushed? 2001, its probably due for a flush. what coolant does it take? (green or orange)
