My first guess would be a gasket - you may want to repost this in the lawnmower section.

SOURCE: gas leaking out of a 1983 cordoba top of carburetor

Did the carb kit come with a new float? It sounds like the float level is not set right, it has a hole in it or the needle is not seating right. If the float is not set correctly it will hit on the carb body before it shuts off the fuel flow with the needle and seat. If the float has a hole in it it will fill with fuel and not float at the proper angle to shut the fuel off when the desired level is reached. Remove the top of the carb and inspect the float when closed it should be just about level with the top plate from the carb. Shake the float and see if you hear any liquid in the float. Also are you running a mechanical or electric pump? Mike
P.S. I myself have forgotten to install the needle in a carb rebuild.

Let me know how you make out.

SOURCE: 89 jeep yj wont keep running

If it's not injected, the idle circuit in the carb either isn't adjusted properly or is plugged, or the float level is too low. A vacuum leak can also do that.

I have a 1963 chevy nova II straight-6. I am having trouble getting it to run without pouring gasoline into the carb. I have replaced the filters and fuel pump. What else could be the problem?

the needle and seat in the carburetor might be stuck shut. Pull the fuel supply line off of the carburetor and unhook the coil wire, so the engine will not fire, crank the engine and make sure the fuel pump is pumping fuel to the carb. If there isn't fuel getting to the carb then you will need to look elsewhere, like maybe the sending unit in the tank. But if you do have good fuel getting to the carb then it is probably the needle and seat in the carb.

Carburetor settings

In general there are fewer ways to adjust the newer carbs than the vintage carbs of the past. Often the vacuum at low idle is the problem and you should check a vacuum port on the intake with a Vacuum gauge.

Sometimes an EGR valve does not shut completely and the engine struggles at idle. If you find that vacuum is adequate, you can adjust the air mixture screws to provide the highest vacuum reading and then crank them in until the vacuum falls less than 1 inch.

It might be beneficial to run the engine and spray a water mist from a hand powered spray bottle around the seams of the intake and carburetor. Also spray any vacuum solenoids or lines. You will notice a change in RPM if there is a leak.

You may have a fuelpump problem A clogged fuel filter or low pressure can affect how the car idles.

Where is the fuel filter on a 1978 corvette Rocheste M4MC carb, and how do I install a new one?

it is in the housing where the fuel line enters the carb. unscrew and remove the input fuel line, then unscrew and remove the housing. take note of the direction of the paper filter you remove. here's a page with more info on that car. http://www.carburetor.ca/carbs/tech/Rochester/Quadrajet-index.html

I installed a new carburator but will not speed up

There were a lot of these years made and the wrecking yard is full of them for extra parts. As far and the carb.it may have been worn out or set around so long that things have frozen up inside. This will requirr you to buy a carb kit and the auto parts store. Shouldn't be but 15 or twenty bucks. But be fore you do that check the fuel filter. Some carburetors have one built in too. It would be right where the fuel line connects to it. The other filter is in the gas line either near the carburetor or under the vehicle running along the driver side door or there abouts. You can take it off when you fand it and blow through the end that is pointed away from te carburetor. Have a paper towel handle so you can blow the excess gas into the towel and check for dirt and gunk. If a lot came out the replace the filter. If it looked pretty good then replace the filter back on the truck because I doubt it is the problem. May I ask why you replaced the carburetor in the first place? The trouble may lie somewhere other then the carburetors. Raz

How do I change the fuel filter in a 1970 Caddy Fleetwood, 472 ci and where is it?

If you can locate where the fuel line goes into the Carb. Remove the fuel line then the larger nut behind that. The fuel filter is inside the larger nut.It is hard to try and get the fuel line off without both moving or twisting the fuel line, and most times there is not enough room to bend it out of the way to get the fuel filter out.If all else fails you can cut the metal line just leave a few inches back from the nut then when reinstalling you can patch it back with a rubber fuel line and clamps. You may also look into installing a inline fuel filter in better location.Well hope this helped.

Jeep wont hardley idle ..when speed gets up to about 30mi. it runs great. about six months we replaced distributor, s.p.wires, s.plugs, fuel filter, fuel pump, air filter, some vacuum hoses. been fine...

Sounds like a possibility of a vacuum leak. Inspect the vacuum tubing for damage or wear or just not being connected. One mechanic's trick is to spray carburetor cleaner on the vacuum lines with the engine running. Use safety goggles when trying this. If there is a vacuum leak - when the carb cleaner hits it the engine will speed up.
