SOURCE: CRANK SHAFT POSITION SENSOR 20002 NISSAN ALTIMA
1st, Nissan had a recall on Crank position sensors for 2002-2006 Altima's. Check with you dealer before you go doing any repairs. You may discover you can get your car repaired at no charge.
NHTSA Campaign ID number :O7V527000
Symptom: Erratic behavior. Stalling and no starts and very difficult to diagnose due to the time frame in which the component actually malfunctions. The warranty should not be limited to the original owner.
I would also need more specifics as to which engine you have so I might assist you in where the location of the sensor is. The Altima had a 4 and a 6 cyl engine offered that year.
SOURCE: CANNOT FIND THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
cerebral_eni: The crank position sensor is located at the back of the engine block just below the cylinder head. It actually projects into the bell housing and reads the teeth on the flywheel where it references TDC for #1 cyl and RPM's of the crank. It's a "Hall effects generator". Unless you are into electronics and have a lab scope to look for a square wave pattern, I will continue with my other input.
Nissan has a recall campaign on the crank angle sensors.
The campaign # is 07V527000:ECM update for stalling;
NHTSA07V527000 NOV 07,
The symptom was brief malfunction of sensor causing the engine to quit running which could potentially put the vehicle at risk for a collision. The sensors would ultimately fail. There was also a voluntary recall on the reprogramming of the ECM's due to stalling problems. TSB# NTB07-081, Campaign ID#R0712
I hope this information is of some assistance to you. You may be able you get your car repaired under warranty! Good Luck!
SOURCE: Nissan Altima 2000 - Engine oil leaking problem.
replace the front oil seal. first i would clean the engine with purple power (degrease etc.) then look at the engine and make sure the leak is not coming from above like possibly the valve cover gasket or from the oil sending unit. try to tighten the bolts on the valve cover and even the oil pan. you never know, you may get lucky. i don't know where you are but front seals are cheap but the labor on the job is what costs you.

ok, my 2002 nissan actualy blew the radiator. I had radiator replaced still didnt run properyl, my brother who is an excellent maechanic came and looked at it...this was the problem(s) 1. After takin out the plugs and checking compression on each cyl., it was discovered that chamber four was full of water (blown headgasket. 2. After head was removed it was also discovered that themorstats were rusted (yes 2 thermo's, although bottom one is not called a thermostat, it is) 3. My brother removed head, checked head and engine block for warpage, they both checked ok, head was planed. 4. He replaced thermo's, waterpump, timing gears and chain, valves, cams all looked very good, replaced the exisiting anti-freeze with the correct type for that engine, changed oil. Put everything back together car runs great. Note: it is important that you torque head exactly to factory specs...three times at different torque specs. Also cam gear turn counter clockwise, keep this in mind when u time it you can end up with a broken camshaft. Thanks for the feedback all, i appreciate it
