I have 2000 Dodge Dakota with a 4.7l engine and this winter I am not getting much heat from the heater, the engine temp is 90c and trying to locate heater hoses but the only hoses runnign through the fire wall are a set of a/c hoses, plus another set which contain a very light oil. Does this heater have an exchanger in the engine to heat up the oil instead of using coolant from the engine? If so how can I get more heat again.

The first thing to check is the coolant level, if the coolant is full and the heater core hose is extremely hot to touch, then you may have a door problem. If you like we can work together on this problem. First check the coolant level. Then run the engine until operating temperature, grab each of the heater core hoses and let me know what you find.

If one of the heater hoses is hot to touch and the other one is cool to the touch, then your heater core is stopped up, here is what happens, the restriction in the core causes the hot water to flow around the outer edge of the heater core so there is no heat in the center of the core so when the blower motor blows air through the heater core its just blowing cold air.
Here is what you can do. Go to the parts store and get a coolant system cleaner and put this in the radiator and drive it for a couple days. Then pull off both heater hoses. Note: Let the system cool before removing hoses so you don't get burnt. Next take a garden hose and back flush the heater core from one side to the other several times. Then put the hoses back on and drive the vehicle to see if this helps, if it doesn't help you will need to replace the heater core.
One more thing if the coolant system has a heater control valve replace it also. It will be the round thing mounted on one of the heater hoses near the heater core.

Are you sure that is oil or could it be just a corosion build up, does the engine run bad, you mentioned no oil in the coolant, but what about coolant in the oil. It sounds like you may need a coolant flush and then see what happens. But check the oil for coolant.

I have checked the coolant level and the system is full, also had the engine at operating temp, checked the heater hoses and one is very hot and the other cool to the touch. It might be a door but how do you check that?
As mention earlier the heater hoses are full of oil (dark oil) no water present in the hoses and no oil in the cooling system, that is what screws me up as there is oil in those hoses (the ones in the box.
I will give this a try as I was able to get some junk out of the heater core but will get some coolant system cleaner and put it in and run for a couple of days here. No that was not oil in the coolant just some brown junk>>>
