2006 Ford F150, light will not come on and 4X4 does not engage when switch is turned to Hi or Lo

    Most of the time, when I turn the 4x4 selector, Nothing happens. No light, no shift into 4x4 hi or low. But, some times when truck hasn't ran after night it will switch once or twice. Then it wont work again.

    Is the system ESOF ( Electronic Shift On the Fly ) or MSOF ( Mechanical Shift On the Fly ) ? Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc ). Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft. If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case. If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem.

The IWE is the cheapest part to start with. The next part could be the Transfer case shift motor. If you can retrieve codes (DTC's) Code p1687 will tell you to check TSB's and SSM"s. This is all on my Bob Moore Ford repair sheet. They found TSB 06-9-8 and performed a resistance check on Transfer case shift motor was ouf tolerance. Replaced motor assy 8L3Z 7G360 A.

I have a 2006 F150. The 4wd selector wont light
If this shift on the fly (electic 4x4) try tapping on the 4x4 electric motor on the tranfer case.Water and dirt get inside and cause it to stick

2002 Ford Explorer 4x4 will not engage. neither 4x4 hi or 4x4 lo will engage. Follow the manual instructions for trans gear position. No trouble/warning lights on in the dash.
Being that its a Ford you may need to check or change the switch or there is a problem (be it electrical or mechanical) with the transfer case. Hope this was helpful
