located on the drivers side under the hood mounted to the sidewall by the master cylinder, use a jumper wire to read the codes by how many times the engine light flash's for example if it flash's 3 times pauses and flashes 2 times would be a code 30 for the 3 flash's and a 2 for the 2, see if this repeats if so you only have one code if it flashes more after the pause of the initial flash's then write down those codes then look them up and find out what the trouble codes are.

If the idle speed is irratic...consider changing the dle air control valve...could also be map sensor or throttle position sensor....any check engine lights??

Instructions (using ignition key method):

Codes are shown by the Check Engine Light (CEL) on the dash. 1. Turn the ignition ON-OFF, ON-OFF, and finally ON again (without starting) 2. Codes will be emitted via CEL on the dashboard display. 3. Read codes as described below. Reading codes: • Each code consists of two groups. • The first group of flashes indicate the 'tens' digits. • The second group of flashes indicate the 'ones' digits. • A short pause separates 'tens' and 'ones' digits. • A long pause separates each trouble code. e.g. Long flash, Long flash (short pause); short flash, short flash (long pause).....then repeats... have your obd II CODES READ this will give you more of an idea what is going on with it. most auto parts stores read these codes. If you are smelling rubber check your serpitine belt for where and if it looks good take the belt loose and check the rest of the components that the serptine belt runs on altinator, water pump,powersteering pump, pully tensioner, other pullys ext.

You don't need to, just cycle key, on (not start) off,on,off,on and leave in on position and count flashes of check engine light.
Will be a 2 digit number with pause in between. For example: 3 flashes, pause, 3 more, is code 33. 1 flash, pause, 2 flashes, is code 12. When you get 5 flashes, pause, 5 more, that's 55 which means end of message.

If your in the U.S. you can go to auto-zone or advance auto and have them test it for you it is obd1 and will need a special scanner to pull codes but it is an easy way to find out if you want more detailed info you can go to www.alldatadiy.com and purchase a subscription and they have the way to scan it without a scanner device it changes over the years but try turning your ignition key to the run then off position three times and watch the check engine light if it flashes like this flash pause flash flash that's code 12 and will repeat 3 times it will do this with each code once you have recorded all codes it will flash code 12 again and start over with the codes once you have the codes post them here for what they mean. Most likely a 02 sensor or catalitc converter going out.
