The actually seat belt is in excellent shape I just need to replace the retractor. New it will cost me $350.00, and so am trying to find a used retractor and replace it myself. I have not been able to find one for the exact year and model of my car, and want to know if there is an interchange part I can use. My car is a 1994 toyota corolla.
Seat belts are not genuine but are made to toyota specs
unless there is a problem in the mounting point , most are a bolt on part to a bracket in the car
go to a wreckers that has toyota wrecks and get good belts from cars that have not been involved in front end collisions
most belts fit a range of years and models across toyota and similar shaped cabins
SOURCE: Front seat belt retractors will not release seat belt for use .
if your car has ever been in an accident where the air bag deployed then it would also activate the seat belt pretentioner which is a small explosive charge the causes the seat belt rachet mechinim to lock into place and needs to be replaced after the accident and i have seen many body shops not do this in the past. a short to power could also easily set off the system. its charged with sodium aziod which is the solid form of rocket fuel. as little as half a volt could set it off and you most likely would not hear it happen. i hope this was useful
SOURCE: All seat belt retractors now fail to catch when
there is a weight inside those that has to "swing" to lock ,as if you were stopping. Just pulling on them they won't lock up.
Bet they are ok
SOURCE: Rear Seat belt pretensioner retractor is broken
the panel just prises off but the clips break dead easy,
IF THE SEAT BELT DOES NOT RETRACT REPLACE IT,youy cannot play with an explosive device.....
SOURCE: driver side seat belt retractor broke. how to fix?
yes you can. I suggest you go to the scrapyard and purchase one there. they are easy to replace and inexpensive.
Please check if your seat belt has "Retractors" or "Automatic Retractor".
Follow these steps to determine if you have a retractor system that will hold car seat securely or your seat belt won't retract as should be:
A. Pull belt all the way out.
b. Allow belt to retract about 6 inches (15 cm).
c. Pull out on belt again.
If belt is locked and you cannot pull the belt out any further, you have an Automatic Locking;
If you pull the belt again all the way out and won't return to normal operation, then the mechanism is damaged, but try first the "retractor" lock to be sure. By Federal Law, nobody will sale a seat belt in a junk yard, try the dealer or order thru the dealer the whole seat belt or the mechanism. I hope that is just a matter of the automatic retractor; you can see this information in your car's manual. Try and we will see.
