HOW TO MAKE A TOOL FOR REMOVING THE HARMONIC BALANCER ON A FORD RANGER

There is one bolt in center of pulley/harmonic balancer. Sounds like the harmonic balancer has started going bad..if bolt in center of pulley is loose...which is fairly uncommon tighten which you just tighten Iike any other bolt. If it is tight then you will need the replacement. Replacement is a good bit more involved. Radiator has to be removed, special tool, harmonic balancer pulley remover is required..it will remove pulley. Then you line up pulley with keyway..tap on with rubber hammer until pulley is on far enough for bolt to be started..tighten the bolt and it pulls the pulley all the way into place.

Remove old crankshaft pulley ( Harmonic Balancer), by putting sturdy socket,think its 19mm, or 3/4 " on the center crankshaft bolt, with a good size breaker bar, wedge the breaker bar in between the suspension, and drive axle, to keep the breaker bar from spinning, while, you now turn the key inside the car, to engage starter, to spin the crankshaft,which may take several attempts, of turning the key, and putting socket back on, they are very stubborn,to break the center bolt loose,
Then remove harmonic balancer, with a PULLER, which requires 2 bolts, in the threaded holes, one on each side of the now empty center bolt hole, autozone , advance, has these to loan out, only requires deposit, which they give back to you, when you return it.
Put square key in slot on bare crankshaft, slide harmonic balancer,(crankshaft pulley,while lining up the square key,and tighten crankshaft bolt.

tool loan at parts store for the removal of balancer .remove main crank bolt then you see bolt hole used with wheel puller to remove it.

I thought the question is for a 01 FORD Ranger and not everything else. The Ranger balancer does not have holes in it other than those used to balance the thing. How do you put bolts into holes that are not there, drill and tap your own? Or is there another tool that is used in this case? Maybe expanding the question as such may narrow down the responses to a good one ... that helps?

Hello....Well first of all...most of the time...To do this job...you will need special tools...There is a center bolt that connects the balancer to the crank shaft...It's driven in really tight so most likely..a pneumatic wrench or a good breaker bar will need to be used to remove it...once you remove the center bolt...there is a tool called a puller that is used to walk the balancer off the crank shaft...You can either rent or buy this tool...in some cases a gear puller will work...or a tool called a harmonic balancer puller can be used..it has either 2 or 3 hooks to clamp onto the harmonic balancer and a bolt in the center that you tighten with a wrench..as you do,,,the balancer slowly inches forward until it is off the crankshaft...now to get the new balancer on..there is a tool called a Press which is a bolt that is specially designed to do the opposite of the puller...you place the new balancer on the crankshaft..install the press as you would the center bolt...and tighten it with a wrench and it will slowly walk the balancer onto the crank shaft...Then you remove the press and install the center bolt..preferrably with a torque wrench...Now...after reading all this...are you sure you want to do this yourself....an honest mecanic will most likely do this job for $150 bucks....Parts and labor....If you do this yourself..let me know how it goes....I hope this was helpful....PEACE...

YOU NEED A HARMONIC BALANCER PULLER TOOL AND A 15M SIX POINT SOCKET TO REMOVE HARMONIC BALANCER BOLT.TURN OFF RADIO AND REMOVE THE DRIVE BELT AND REMOVE THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE. REMOVE THE STARTER SO YOU CAN PUT A LARGE SCREW DRIVER OR LARGE PUNCH TO STICK IN ONE OF THE FLY WHEEL HOLES TO KEEP ENGINE FROM TURNING WHEN YOU LOOSEN THE HARMONIC BALANCE BOLT. ALSO SCREW DRIVER AND PUNCH CAN KEEP ENGINE FROM TURNING WHEN REMOVER THE HARMONIC BALANCER. YOU WILL NEED A HELPER TO HOLD PUNCH OR SCREW DRIVER WHILE YOU LOOSEN THE BOLT. YOU CAN GO TO SEARS OR ANY AUTO PARTS STORE AND BUY HARMONIC BALANCER PULLER.TORQUE HARMONIC BALANCER BOLT TO 76 FT LBS.

You remove the giant bolt, then you use a harmonic balancer puller, which essentially bolts up rather than using claws to grab. The bolts of the puller go into the pulley fastening bolt holes.

Something must happen to protect the crank threads, a spacer, using the retainer bolt, or whatever, just do not kill the threads.

Here you go this is what your looking for

You'll need to remove the crankshaft pulley and the harmonic balancer, which you'll need a harmonic balancer removal tool. The center bolt is usually on really tight. You can use a seal puller to remove the crankshaft seal from the timing cover.

You'll have to remove the drive belt. Remove the lower pulley and large bolt in the center of the balancer. If the bolt is on really tight, remove a spark plug, move the piston to the bottom of the cylinder by turning the engine, stuff a bunch of rope in the spark plug hole, as much as you can. Now turn the engine counter-clockwise and the center bolt will break loose for you. Once the bolt has broken loose, rotate the engine clockwise again just enough to remove the rope. Remove the balancer bolt and get a balancer removal tool and pull the balancer off.
