95 Explorer has intermittent problem engaging 4WD

When I flip the 4WD switch in my 95 Explorer, the light sometimes comes on, sometimes doesn't. If I'm in 4WD Low it sometimes won't switch to 4WD Auto, for example. If I play with the switch for awhile, it eventually gets into the drive type I want, but it can take a lot of fiddling.
BTW, the light on the dash seems to be accurate. If it's on, I am in that drive mode. If it's off, I'm definitely in 2WD.
If I leave it in, say, 4WD Auto, it will stay there. That is to say that the light doesn't randomly go off.

Have you ever had the 4X4 transfer case serviced with new fluid? If not try that first.

SOURCE: 2004 ford crown vic. intermittant probs with low/high beam.

I finally bit the bullet and took it into the dealer. It was indeed the Light Control Module (LCM). The dealer said there was not a service bulletin issued on this problem but when I asked the service manager to talk to the Ford rep about assisting with this safety issue, it took all of ten seconds for him to come back on the line and say that they would fix the whole thing for $100. (My car is not under warranty and the LCM alone is $480). Not sure exactly what happened behind the scenes but it appears Ford would rather fix this than have an issue made of it. (This is a privately owned car that does have wigwags and other emergency lighting equipment installed. These were not a factor).

SOURCE: Ford explorer stuck in low 4wheel drive

put it back into 2 wheel drive, then reverse 10 or 15 feet, this should unlock the hubs.

SOURCE: 4x4 lights flash, will not engage into 4wd

This is called the selector motor and you may be correct this is a common problem with these trucks the selector motor goes bad and will not engage the correct gear setting you select.

Testimonial: "Thanks John. I now need to test to confirm this. Any suggestions."

4wd module isnt workin

First check these steps in engaging.
Stop completely, clutch in or neutral for automatics, step on brake pedal, engage 4wd, select gear. Sometimes the engage switch is connect to the brake also. I have to step onthe brake to get into 4Low on my 1993 Explorer.
Next step is to check for loose wires under the transmission. If the plug came out the trans wont know to get into 4wd.
Lastly, if you are handy, get a chiltons or othr manual and remove and clean the 4wd module.
If none of these work then the module is probably burned out, replace or take to a shop for replacement.
Hope this helps you get it fixed.

4wd wont engage-intermittent-auto sometimes fails to engage the 4wd-sometimes the 2wd light is on-other times no lights are on

You either have a switch problem or the shift shaft seal is leaking oil into the shift motor(encoder motor) on the transfer case(t-case). A switch is an east fix but if it's a seal leak you have to remove and disassemble the t-case in order to replace the seal then you have to replace the encoder sensor and get it reprogrammed by a dealer. Not easy or cheap.

4wd high and 4wd low lights flashing at same time on 1997 ford explorer and often engages 4wd when not needed.

possible solution is to take out your dash control panel which has 2 screws . pull it out the radio and all will come out and check the wirer behind the switch. see if it is louse or disconnected also you could need a new switch

4wd not engaging no indicater lgt basicaly no 4wd

I had a prolem with my 1998 Ford Explorer XLT. The 4wd indicator light would randomly start to blink while moving and when I flipped the switch to 4wd hi or low it would engage but easily disengage and the indicator lights would not come on. I was hearing a grinding sound coming from my hubs so I replaced both front hub assemblies and the light stopped blinking and 4wd hi/low works great now. it was about 300 bucks for the hub assemblies and only took me an hour or two to change.
