assuming the key is the 1 the you have always been using and no battery changes in the vehicle , there are 4 fuses involved with the security system , i would start by checking them . right rear of engine compartment holds 1 maxi fuse #4 20 amp PCM VATS , and 3 other others in the I/P fuse box , get a tester and check all fuses .

make sure you have power getting to your starter when you crank. check the small nut on the starter. should have 12 v or very close to it. this will tell you if your getting power to the starter or if somethign before the starter and something maybe with your anti theft system or not. its hard to say online cause of that anti theft. doest the light flash at all? the anti theft light?
if your getting power to the starter when you crank make sure your getting good power to the starter by turning on the head lights and see if they dim. a good starter will cause the headlites to dim when attempting to start. if nothing dims check connections. or assume bad starter motor. make sure your also getting power to the main starter stud as well.
good luck

Hello sthomasbf
This sounds like it may be a problem with the passII security sys.
First check the two fuses in the fuse block, #1A and #2E the block is
located under the left side of dash. They may be marked as vehicle anti
theft system(vats)#1A. Fuse #2E may be marked vats/air bags.If these
are good, locate the anti theft relay located above the fuse block.
There will be a yellow wire and a purple wire on each side of the relay,
you wan't to jump the yel wire(A2) to the ppl wire(C1) one of the yellow
wires will run from the relay back up the steering colum. This wire is C1
the ppl wire on the other side of the relay is A2 jump these two wires
and this will bypass the relay. If the car still won't start the problem is
most likely in the colum, either the chip in the key or the resistor in
the ign. lock. You can start the car by locating the purple wire under
the hood in the harness with the blk plastic cover, that runs accross the
firewall. In the same bundle of wires there should be a slightly thicker
red wire, with the key in the on pos. take a sharp knife and cut into
the 2 wires at the same time to make a connection. This will turn the
starter and start the car. If you need to take it to get the key and lock
checked. Hope this helps.

It is a sign of a clogged convertor, but i happen to own the same car (with a series 2 3800) and had the same symtpoms going on when i bought if for the wife. Mine turned out to be a Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve (EGR Valve).
To kind of get a feel for what is going on with the convertor, you can have someone help you but sitting in the drivers seat, with the car running. You go behind the car near the tail pipe. Now have the other person rev it up a little, not to much though. Put your hand but the tail pipe to see what kind of pressure the exhaust has. You can use another vehical to do the same thing to feel what things are supposed to feel like. If the convertor is plugged, the pressure of exhaust coming out will be a lot softer than it should be.
If after checking it as discribed above, if you feel it is plugged, grab a hammer, and bang the heck out of it. This will break up and loosen the clogged part without have to replace it.
There is no really good way to test a EGR vavle without a special computer. Replacing it however, does seem to me as the most likely repair for this vehical. It is located on the top of the drivers side of the motor. It look like a cylinder with a wire coming out of the cap, and is held on by 2 13mm nuts.
Good Luck....

No, if it's a PK3 security, you can relearn it yourself. Here's what you do.
Disconnect battery for ten minutes. Reconnect it, put your main key in the ignition, and turn it to the ON position ONLY. DO NOT TRY TO START IT. Leave it in the on position till the security light goes out. Turn key off, WAIT THIRTY SECONDS, REPEAT. Do this a total of three times, waiting thirty seconds between each time. When security light goes off the third time. Turn car off, then try and start it. It should work, and start up. There is another process for programming a second key to the car.
