It very well can be that depending on the severity of the ticking noise, if it sounds like its coming from the top of the engine, place your hand on it only when you first start it up and if you can feel it knocking slightly and if the noise dies away once warmed up id say its your lifter, if its a heavier knocking rather than a ticking and comes from below or bottom end of engine it may be big end bearing, not good. try putting some engine treatment through the engine oil and make sure you run it in as directions state then change the oil and filter and see if that helps :)

There are some metal brackets that wrap around your lifters. They get old and brake pull the valve cover off and see. Spi engines is 3 bolts on valve cover and the engine mount on the left. Make sure to put a floor jack under the oil pan to hold the engine up.

My manuel trans. 2001 for focus has a rattle sound and vibrates a bit when starting. It seems to go away after it warms up a bit, but it is getting progressively worse and the vibration is lasting lon

I had a 1984 Mustang 4 cylinder that match the symptoms of your Ford Focus. I found that it was the core inside the catalytic converter had broke up and started to rattle. Not saying this is your problem but a possibility. Another possiblity, exhaust bumping the body of the car.
The wer wer wer sound you hear going over uneven ground is probably not related to the other mentioned. It sounds like the four wheel independent suspension adjusting to the terrain. Cool temperatures help promote this noise due to rubber bushing that your vehicle has in the suspension areas. Annoying, but considered normal. Hope this points you in the right direction and helps. Let me know what you found. Later, Todd

My 2001 ford focus is making a clocking noise.

Te first thing to do is to locate the noise source. You can do it with a long screw driver touching the tip on the engine and the holder at your ear. A needle stethoscope can do the job better. The noise might be a overhead cam tick, crank shaft knock, bad bearing or anything else.Hope this will help to narrow the problem.

I have a 2001 Ford ranger supercab that makes rattling noises. It has a 4.0L SOHC. It makes a very fast and loud metallic rattle wich softens anfter about a second or so when I first start it for the day....

4.0l's are notorious for valve rattle on cold start-up. There is really nothing you can do to make it go away short of completely replacing the valve train in the top end, and that isn't a permanent fix. It's is an top end oiling issue from the factory. Just don't race your engine on cold start-up until the rattle stops.

The rattle in the transmission sounds to me to be more of a loose dust shield/heat shield around the transmission or exhaust than a mechanical issue.

Are you sure that the noise is a rattle? lifters make a ticking noise, pistons, piston pins and bearing rattle, lifter tick goes away in seconds, piston and bearing related noises take longer, and in the case of rod bearing not at all, it sounds like you may have piston noise, and in that case I would not worry about it, I would run a few cans of combustion chamber cleaner with you next 2 fill ups, carbon build up on the the # 1 piston ring land can cause the piston to "rock" in the cylinder and make a rattle type noise. I have a 1996 Corvette that has a rattle, it is a piston, GM checked it and told me not to worry about it, of course that advice cost $50.00. Also this type of noise is common to the later production 3.8L V6. Hope this sets your fears of a large repair bill to rest, just drive it, but make sure you use the correct oil and change it when recommended.
