High idle in park pontiac 04 grand am

Sometimes when my car is in park she idles at like 3...but while driving she will idle at about 1-1.5 going only 35 miles per hour...also when I decelerate from highway on to off ramp she will just straight die, mainly when coming off going into a right turn. Once she dies, I can't start her right away. I lose power steering. Please help. Thank you.

Does your car **** while idling like you have just stepped on the accelator?  What happens when you are driving at 100km per hour, does is feel like you are losing power as well?

  • Anonymous Sep 11, 2012

She dies while stepping on the break but the high idle, I don't have to step on the accelrator. She just goes on her own and I have to break to keep her at 35 mph. Yes it does feel like she is struggling to maintain power

I had the TPS changed and I also found out the idle control valve needed to changed out, but today, I lost my turn signals. Hazards worked. I'm so confused now.

Did you get it checked for engine oil contamination? The computer will not show any codes for this. You might end up changing all the sensors again if the engine oil is not good. It will mess the new idle sensor, throttle sensor plus air flow sensor. I went through all that and all I needed was the engine to get cleaned.

Do you have a place where they can check the engine for contamination? Mine had a similar problem it would die after slowing down at the junction, Ask your mechanic to clean the engine and also check the throttle sensor and it will be good as new.

Good luck

Thank you. No I don't but I will call Firestone and set an appointment with them. The funny thing is that no codes have popped and the check engine light did not come one. Thank you.

My harrier costed me the idle sensor, air flow sensor, and in the end we found out that the problem was that the engine needed to be cleaned. The codes stopped popping up just like your cars" but the car was still jerking and consuming a lot of fuel. I got it back 3 days ago and am a very happy lady! Good luck keep me posted.

How do you clean the engine? Do I have to take it somewhere? and how much does it average? Thank you!

  • Anonymous Sep 12, 2012

Your local grage should be able to give you a quote. They have to remove the engine and use special fluid to clean it NOT Water. Contact your local mechanic and compare the quotes. My car is perfect and it might save you the headache. Unscrew the engine oil cap and let me know what you see.

I changed out the tps and the idle control sensor. She worked great the last two days, then today, no turn signals. The hzards worked but the turn signals quit. I'm at a loss now.

SOURCE: 1995 pontiac bonneville stalls

I just went through lots of troubleshooting and expense on my 1996. Whenever I would lift my foot off the accelerator and was below about 30 mph, the rpm's would starts jumping around and sometimes it would stall. If I gave it a little gas (accelerator), I could sometimes keep it running. It also backfired once in a while. Starts right back up. Also, if I let it idle while in part, it would die after 1-2 minutes.

I ended up finding a hole in the fuel regulator. About a ~$70 part if you get an AC Delco, but very simple to change.

SOURCE: car idles rough and stalls

Have you ever changed the fuel filter? If it's not that, and it's not a vacuum leak, it is probably your idle air control valve.

SOURCE: 97 grand prix gtp starts then immediatly dies

If you have a GTP these engines use a hi output fuel pump. they use a fuel pump resistor located under the battery tray (look up from under the car) This resistor lowers the voltage to the fuel fump when not in boost mode. because of its locatoin it is prone to corrosion. if you bypass the wires and the engine starts and stays running replace the resistor

Have a 1998 pontiac grand am and it feels like the throttle is stuck although i dont think it has a throttle cable... when i put the car in park the rpms are at 3000

1998 has a throttle cable. The throttle body has an idle air valve that can sometimes become unseated causing high idle. It can be removed and cleaned and reinstalled. Also the throttle body can be cleaned and reinstalled. I suggest a Hanes manual from a parts place most of these places will run diagnostics on your car for free as well, just ask. If this has been helpfull please leave feedback. Thanks, SP

High rev problem

this problem I find in alot of 3.4 ltre grand-ams and that is the wiring go to the intake air temp sensor is broken at the connector. the wire will look good but in the insulation it will be broken. just give each wire a tug, if the wire pulls out then that is the broken one.

My RPM is sometimes way too high on my 2000 Grand Am GT V6

There are a couple possibilities for this. One, the IAC (Idle Air Control) motor may be bad. But Ive also seen this happen when the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) goes bad. However, when the TPS goes bad there is usually some changes in the way the car shifts (automatic tranny), delayed shifts, hard shifts, etc.
