My 200sx will not start. i do not hear the fuel pump when I turn the key as i normally do. The pump is less than 2 years old. is there anything else i can check before i pull the pump?
Fuel filter also if it has a pump in the tank you should keep at least a fourth of a tank of gas because the gas is what keeps the pump from over heating also check the fuel pump relay and the oil pressure switch because if the oil pressure is to low it stop the car from running to keep from blowing it up .

Could be the fuel pump. Can you hear it run when you turn the key on? If not sure, pull the gas cap and listen there. If you don't hear it. Hit the bottom of the tank about where the fuel pump would be. If it starts then, replace the fuel pump. Running out of gas will kill old fuel pumps. Check the plugs for spark. No spark, read the codes. Could be coil/s or crank sensor.
This could be a few things. One is bad quality gas but since it started up again that may not be the cause. The other may be the fuel filter, fuel pump, or fuel injectors. Any of them would cause the engine to sputter and shut off. Do you normally buy fuel from this station? Was it a little old "Mom & Pop" station? They sometimes have dirt in their fuel. If not does the station you by from have pure gas, no ethanol. It's getting hard to find fuel that isn't at least "E-10" or 10% ethanol (alcohol). GM vehicles made after '97-'98 will run just fine on E-10. One thing about ethanol is it is basically like a solvent. We use alcohol to clean product before going into a paint process. It breaks down the oils and dirt. This can happen in a gas tank with ethanol. Especially if you have never or almost never used E-10 or higher fuel. Are you sure you didn't happen to buy E-85 fuel? Also, do you normally keep your tank at least half full? Sometimes a gas tank, fuel lines, or fuel injectors will have a varnish like build up and the ethanol will break it down and it will clog up the fuel filter, fuel pump, or fuel injectors. Do you know when the last time your fuel filter was changed? Then again it may be the fuel pump may be weak and/or about to fail. It happens and it can be expensive because the pump is inside the gas tank. I found out not to let the fuel level get super low, too. I let that happen one time while on the road and I almost couldn't get it started. One thing you can do to help extend the life of the pump is when you want to start your Tahoe, first turn the key to the run position without starting the engine. You get a lot of warning sounds for a couple of seconds but if you listen really close you probably can just hear the fuel pump pressurize the lines. It only takes a second and once it is pressurized you can't hear the pump. This will help extend the life of the pump as it doesn't have to work as hard for that short period of time during start. Most people will turn the key from OFF to START in one quick turn. Try to get into this habit for a while. It doesn't cost you anything and if it works it will save you some hassle until something actually completely breaks down. My son has an old BMW and he was complaining about having to put 2 fuel pumps in it in 2 years. I told him to try letting the pump charge the system before starting and he hasn't changed the pump in almost 4 years. Now it's part of the cute quirk of having a 32 year old car.
FUEL PUMP ONLY HUM'S FOR 2 SECONDS WHEN YOU TURN KEY TO ON, NOT START, POSITION. YOU CANNOT HEAR PUMP RUN WHEN CAR IS RUNNING ! THIS 2 SEC., IS THE PUMP PRIMING ITSELF TO START ENGINE. YOU MIGHT BE HEARING EITHER THE POWER STEERING OR WHATEVER, NOT THE FUEL PUMP!!!!!! GIVEN THE YEAR OF THIS CAR, YOUR FUEL PUMP COULD BE BAD, CHECK FUSES, RELAY, GROUND WIRES, TO PUMP, ALSO CHANGE YOUR FUEL FILTER !!!!! AIR FILTER ALSO !!!!!!! SPARK PLUG WIRES SHOULD ALSO BE REPLACED !!!!
You probably have a bad fuel pump. Get a fuel pressure gauge and check for fuel pressure at the shrader valve. Put the key to the on position. Your fuel pump should run for about 2 seconds. Your pressure should go up to 30-40 psi. If no pressure your pump is bad. Make sure you hear the relay come on, otherwise could be the relay. You should hear it click when you turn the key to the on position. Joe.
Having a fuel pump fail is common on any car over 10 years old. A simple test you can do is to turn the key to on, but not to start. You should hear the whir of the fuel pump run for 2 seconds. A second test can be to bump the starter and listen for the 2 second whir again. If you are unsure if you are hearing the whir have someone listen at filler neck, with the gas cap off. If you can't hear anything, the fuel pump isn't running.
The fuel pump will come on then, shut off when the key is placed in the ON position, this is normal. What is not normal, is when the key is turned to start the engine, and the fuel pump does not run when the engine is running at the same time. The initial power up you hear is a prime function that all vehicles have.
Hmmm so the old boy wont start without some starting fluid eh? I Love GM vehicles but I am not there. Here is a checklist of what I would ask myself were I there and able to test. 1. are the batteries and starter in good condition so it cranks at the speed it should without killing the voltage necessary to fire the injectors? 2. what is the fuel pressure to the injectors? 3. when was the last tuneup?
Id lean towards the fuel pressure because by this year it started being more critical and the pumps were in the tank and they would start going bad and causing all sorts of hard to troubleshoot problems. These days I pretty much start troubleshooting with checking fuel pressure. Fuel pressure with the key on engine off should be 60-66. anything less then that could be a problem.
If you hear the pump running when you turn the key on, likely it's good. It can drain back while sitting overnight but so can a bad injector (testing necessary) Two years may be a long time if wires are not good quality check them as well as cap and rotor. If fuel filter is old, it may need to be replaced. Careful testing is important, especially with the amount of expensive electronic controls on your engine. That's why good shops invest thousands of dollars in equipment and don't employ psychics instead. The best you can do without such equipment is to determine if you have fuel and spark when it's not starting, then find out why whatever is missing isn't there.
I i were you i would check the ignition. it sounds like you are only connecting some of the time. And yes it is very normal to hear the fuel pump kick on when you turn the key to the on position.
