If the vehicle will not go into reverse, you are having a transmission issue. Check transmission fluid level and condition. If fluid level is correct but fluid is burnt or watery, immediately have fluid and filter changed but don't expect a miracle... it may or may not fix the issue.
You may be looking at the need for a transmission rebuild.
There are generally only two kinds of ps. fluid. Honda.. and everything else... It should be regular ps. fluid, but always consult you'r dipstick (lol) or dealer.
Your owner's manual lists the correct fluid. Sometimes it is listed on the P/S fill cap. If you remove all the fluid then use ATF+4 fluid. If you are only topping it off then use ATF+3. This is the same fluid that you use in the Automatic Transmission of your Neon.
power steering pump probably went out.. if you can easily get at the belt and are any kind of mechanically inclined, remove the drive belt to the p/s pump and then start the car if the noise is gone then its probably part of the power steering pump
I know E46's use ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluids) for their power-steering systems. BMW Reccomends to use a common Dextron III / Mercon Automatic
Transmission Fluid.
Not really sure what your asking. But if your leaking from the power steering unit but it looks like tranny fluid it's because it is tranny fluid. Power steer fluid and tranny fluid are the same except that tranny fluid has a red dye in it.
Nothing will happen. Power steering fluid is what you should have used. ATF is Automatic Transmission Fluid. This fluid is more intended where friction qualities are needed. It will work, but power steering fluid is better for the pump and hoses and gives the rack and pinion a better lubrication the ATF.Don't worry you are fine as it is.
