Get a used spark plug and hook it to a sparkplug wire and have someone crank it over and ground the plug and see if it sparks if it don't you have a problem with the computer or electronic ignition. Or it could be that it jumped timing.

Check the distributor position when the engine is turned to TDC , the rotor should be facing close to no. 1 spark plug lead.Try spray some quick start spray in the inlet and see if it takes , if so then your fuel return is dumping too much fuel. The older pressure regulators were adjustable by a small screw next to the diaphragm.

SOURCE: 98 land rover discovery fuel pump replacement directions

This site has a lot of information regarding your Discovery including pricing, specs etc. I suspect you can find what you need here:
http://www.rangerovers.net/rrpartsv.htm#fuelreg

I was going to write that typical fuel pressure ranges somewhere between 15 & 25# and would have been 12# low.
Guess checking before pretending expertise is wise . . .

SOURCE: Starts fine when cold, after running dies on idle then wont start

Sounds like the fuel filter is dirty and needing to be changed. It's cheap and easy to swap out.

The ignition system is controlled by the ECM. Check power at fuse box in on right side under dash. Check fuses right side engine compartmentlower dash panel if all OK check power to ECM located right side "A" pillar in alloy box. this unit could be faulty if no spark at coils, assuming they have been connected correctly. may have to get tested for codes at L/R dealer or someone with test tool. Another source of problem may well be flat battery in transponder key. The indicator light on the dash willflash rapidly for 10 seconds if the vehicle has been unlocked with the remote and the drivers door is opened if the battery in remote is getting low

Hi justin, sounds like you have a headgasket problem are you going through any water? If not you may have a leaking fuel injector or faullty fuel pressure regulator. you either have fuel or water leaking into a cylinder causing it to miss fire on first start up.

98 V8 petrol was spewing out water from radiator (but not all the time). We flushed radiator and now wont start at all.It sounds like it trying to start but just won't turn over. What could it be?

this sounds like you might have a blown head gasket. there has to be a reason that excessive pressure was introduced to the cooling system. i would run a compression test and im certain youll find a couple of cylinders low.

How do i change freeze plugs on 96 land rover discovery

Diesel or V8 Petrol?

The side one are relatively easy to change after removing the exhaust manifolds but there are two at the back of the engine on the V8 and to replace them means either taking the engine or transmission out. See this pic of the back of my engine: http://p38arover.com/rover/p38a/pix/4.6%20rear.jpg
