Before saying that might have a cracked cylinder head or blown gasket,I recommend you to check the following for clearing some doubts. Have you checked whether the radiator is clogged?,have you checked whether the matrix is not clogged? have you bled the cooling system? Also check when you accelerating with radiator cap on if the radiator hose upper expands,if so means that the engine coolant is pressurized and the problem is the cylinder head.

SOURCE: 1990 Subaru Liberty Overheats

Hi,

I had the same problem with my 1993 Liberty LX. Remove the thermostat (located inside bottom radiator hose engine connection - take the connection off and thermostat is inside). Reassemble (minus thermostat), reconnect bottom hose. Slowly (very, very slowly) refill the radiator and remove the bleed plug ( located beside the top hose connection to the radiator - a black square plug with a phillips head cross in the middle). When the radiator is full and clear water (no air bubbles) is coming out of the bleed point, replace the bleed plug and then the radiator cap.

Run the engine for five minutes (approx) or until normal engine temperature is reached. Allow the engine to cool down and recheck the water level - fill if necessary ensuring that the bleed plug is open and clear water is coming out of that point. Replace Bleed plug and then radiator cap. Run engine for five minutes (approx) and then test dive. If the engine overheats keep filling the radiator until there are no air bubbles coming from out of the bleed point.

This fixed my overheating problem. Good luck and safe motoring.

SOURCE: 98 328IS OVERHEATING AFTER CHANGING THERMOSTAT

Are you putting the thermostat in correctly? It it will not work backwards.

And to confirm that there isn't a different problem, take the thermostat out all together and see if it overheats.

Engine not fully warming up is not usually caused by the thermostat. Stats usually fail closed, not open.

You will want to check the water temperature sending unit or gauge after verify the water temperature with an external calibrated thermometer. You can attach and insulate the external thermometer to the housing where thermostat is located.

Reply back what you figure out. I will be happy to help you further.

Sometimes fords can be tricky. Try to be sure that all of the air is purged from the system. I usually do this with a manual release cap. run the engine then slowly release the pressure. then the system will stabilize. If that doesn't help then you may have something restricting flow inside the water jackets through the engine. some shops have those nifty little cameras that they can run through the system to look for potential problems. hope it works out for you. I know how how much of a pain some of these problems can be. Good luck.

Overheating problem for 1996 Hyundai lantra sportswagon

If you have already checked the radiator, fluids, thermostat, and thermo fans and your 1996 Hyundai Lantra Sportswagon is still overheating, there could be other issues causing the problem. Here are a few other things you can check:
  1. Water pump: The water pump is responsible for circulating coolant through the engine and radiator. If the water pump is not functioning properly, it can cause the engine to overheat.
  2. Head gasket: The head gasket seals the cylinder head to the engine block. If the head gasket is damaged or fails, it can allow coolant to leak into the engine, which can cause the engine to overheat.
  3. Cylinder head: If the cylinder head is cracked or damaged, it can cause the engine to overheat.
  4. Engine block: If the engine block is damaged or has a crack, it can cause the engine to overheat.
  5. Clogged radiator: If the radiator is clogged with debris, it can prevent the coolant from flowing properly and cause the engine to overheat.
To determine the cause of the overheating problem, it will be necessary to perform a thorough inspection of the engine and related components. If you are unable to locate the source of the problem or are not comfortable attempting to fix it yourself, it is recommended to have the vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic.

2003 ce lancer car keeps overheating... thermo fan isnt working... coolant is going but no leak.. checked fuses all seem fine.. not sure what to do next

It should be either the thermostat or the water pump. The water pump will sometimes allow you to go about 25-30 miles before it overheats. The thermostat would likely be the cause if once the temperature guage starts going up,it kind of just keeps going and overheats. You need to avoid driving and overheating as much as possible due to very bad engine damage.Hopefully you have a second car.You can call a couple shops, they normally will give you a free opinion, just describe it with as much information as you can to get an accurate one. Also you can get free estimates unless you plan to self-repair.Good luck!
