Have 2006 Suzuki Forenza sedan.....64K miles on it......check engine light comes on/goes off....Autozone said it was a sensor problem but OK to drive. Dealership said it would be $400 to fix it, and I don't have that kind of money with Christmas here. I am worried it will mess up the engine though. Putting the car in reverse seems to be what triggers engine light coming on.
There is a transmission sensor on the transmission block, you can see it under the hood on the drivers side right under the waterhose and its called neutral safety switch.when the sensor fails the engene light comes on and the D on the transmission slips. if you want to fix it yourself is very easy if you have some mechanic skills. first disconect the waterhose if you donot want to have any problems later, there are two screws holding the sensor and one nut in the middle, unplug the harness, remove the sensor, get the sensor at the dealership ,plug in the new sensor to the harness and set it to neutral by watching the car gears on dash, set the trany pin to neutral, the teeth on the sensor will find the way in easely by doing this, reconect everything, reset the car computer by disconecting the battery ground cable and stepping on the break pedal a few times for at least one minute, reconect the battery cable and you are done! iam not a mechanic,i just have some mechanic skills and thats how i fixed my suzuki forenza 2007 myself.
lonestar4 thank you, I replaced range sensor using your advice. Cost $60. and was
fairly easy to do. I never loosened the water hose, could have made it easier. Resetting
the computer took your method and a few shut it off in netural and restarts, then like new.
You saved me $107 in labor costs. Love this site. James, Ohio
Where can I purchase the part?
my mechanic found the part @ a napa store. He charged me 65 for the sensor and 80 in labor. Well worth it. Stupid suzuki!

I have a 2006 Suzuki Forenza w/ only 43950 miles on it...I've taken it numerous times for repairs and now it's out of warranty (beside power train)ex.throttle body, front struts, speedometer, seat belt, door handle and now the transmission range sensor.....I wish they would just do a recall on this vehicle. That is why everyone needs to file a complaint w/ NHTSA

No mechanic skills here, but transmission range sensor went out on our car around 70,000 miles, changed ourselves, VERY EASY! some bolts here and there, and plug it in reset the computer by disconnecting the battery and you're done :) Just make sure that the sensor is in the right spot when sliding it onto the rod coming from the tranny or else it won't work :)
I have had my 06 Lorenza for less then in a year. It has only had one owner previous to me. I got the diagnostic done and it says its a sensor/switch and a transmission malfunction but it has jerking when I put it in gear so it seems to me the transmission is bad to. I guess im gonna get the sensor fixed and see if it gets better
I have a 2005 Suzuki Reno... the car has 68000 miles on it and seems like the two times i have filled it up with gas theengine light comes on and it will not shift out of 1st gear...the first time it done it i sit there and was waiting for the tow truck and it just started shifting again.....what is the problem? Please help i just got this car
Its a range sensor on your trans block. Costs 60 bucks @ napa.
My daughter has a 2008 Suzuki Forenza she has already had to take it to the dealership for a problem with the car losing power and not wanting to shift it hesitates and then slowly gains power. They said the fixed the problem. The car broke down on the interstate and was towed back to the dealer ship and they told her it was a spark plug. Now it's still doing the same thing her car has a sealed transmission so you can not check the fluid HELP I have been unable to find any recalls on this

I had the same problem with my 2006 Forenza - the problem was the transmission range sensor. If you look under the hood, on the drivers side, you'll see your trans. cable connected to a round part that also has an electrical cable coming from it. That is it. Part costs $36.07 at oemsuzukiparts.com (search for Neutral safety switch in the mechanical catalog).

your transmission range sensor needs to be replaced
SOURCE: on my 2007 suzuki forenza the check engine light
no such code on that car, auto zone uses global testing which pulls universal codes, so that code means someting different for the suzuki, need to have it checked by the dealer or a shop that has import software, or post the code # and i can translate it into import code, good luck.

2006 SUSUKI FORENZA WITH 48800 MILES . I 'VE HAD IT A YEAR IN MARCH 2009.I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, WITH ENGINE CUTTING OFF ,ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS COLD IN THE MORNING. CHECK ENGINE HAS BEEN COME ON AND OFF AT DIFFERENT TIME.YESTERDAY PUT IT IN DRIVE AND IT WOULDN'T GO ,THEN TOOK IT OUT GEAR THEN IT WENT IN GEAR THE SECOND TIME.WHAT MIGHT BE THE PROLEM AND HOW I CAN FIX IT??
2006 Forenza 50000 miles. We have the same problem. Suzuki said it is a sensor or something in the transmission. It's not covered under the power rain warranty. They found some other issues that were covered under the warranty. In the end they are fixing the sensor problem which is roughly $360, also replacing the serpentine which is $70. and the timing belt which is $120. We didn't have to do the timing belt or serpentince but they highly recommended it. Also we are only being charged for the part since they have to get through that stuff before the root of the problem. So in the end it's almost $600 out of pocket! :( We decided to fix it and then put the car up for sale. We have had nothing but issues with this car.
I have a 2006 forenza with 44000 miles and the check engine light is on and it goes on and off as well but with that while I drive the car gears on dash blinks and it goes out of gear. I went the dealership and they told me that it's a sensor in the transmission and they are refusing to fix the problem under my extended warrenty. i don't have the money to fix the problem. what should I do?
