I would check the fuel pump relay first. You should have some fuel pressure in the lines when you turn the key on. The relay is powered for 3 seconds to boost pressure until the engine starts.
The relay may not be working or the check valve in the pump may be letting fuel back into the tank which would cause the pressure to drop to zero when the engine is off. You should have at least 15psi with a TBI system and 35psi with MFI.

I also believed it was fuel pump related. My father-in-law changed the fuel filter. He said always start with the cheapest solution. Next would be the fuel regulator valve. Contrary to what I learned on the internet it's actually located "under" the engine block. New fuel filter would be the last resort. Filter cost $15, valve cost $50 new pump around $275. He said always start with the cheapest solution first.. Thanks for your help. Vehicle problems are not as easy as they used to be.

All you guys(gals) were great but this guy( he's 76 years old) is the best I have ever seenHe can fix anything but his specialty is cars/trucks. He said the only thing he can't do is overhaul an automatic transmission. Geez that's it?

Have the fuel pump checked for fuel pressure. Sounds like you got residual pressure but not sufficient running pressure.

Engine wont start when cold but after starting with starting fluid runs fine

The heat might have melted or damaged your main relay. Does it turn over or try to start, or does the lights simply come on and it does nothing?

My 1997 Chevy c1500 5.0L misses very bad with loud poping noise coming from underneath truck. This happens only after I drive for about 30 min. And turn off truck and restart. After I start it back up it...

Test that the temperature sending unit in the water system is working properly. When the engine is cold, the computer puts it in cold start mode. Once warmed the temp sensor tells the computer to stop sending excess fuel to the engine and taking the cold start mode to off position. If the sensor is faulty, it stays in cold start mode and keeps dumping excess fuel into the engine causing your situation. Like your running with the choke on after warm-up.

Chevy k1500 5.7 v8 wont start

Sounds like your timing is off when you placed the distributor back in or your spark plug wires are crossed. Start with the simple and check the spark plug wire firing order. 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 Cylinder numbers drivers side 1-3-5-7 radiator to firewall. Cylinder numbers passenger side 2-4-6-8 radiator to firewall. Distributor cap #1 is at 5 O'clock and rotates clock wise. Once that is establish to be good then make sure the cylinder 1 is at TDC with the distributor rotor at the #1 position. Good luck and hope it's a crossed firing order.

My 1997 chevy tahoe will not start without starting fluid. I hear the fuel pump running and have changed the fuel pressure regulator already and the fuel filter. The pump is only a year old. Have checked...

IVE HAD PLENTY OF THESE GO OUT EVEN A MONTH LATER. AS FAR AS THE STARTING FLUID JUST TRY AND CYCLE KEY BUT KEEP IT FROM TURNING STATER OVER. TURN ON AND OFF ABOUT 3 TO 5 TIMES IT SHOULD BUILD ENOUGH PRESSURE TO START. TO START MINIMUN PRESS IS 55PSI.

1997 Chevy K1500 Z71 Chevy fuel injector problem

Did you check fuel pressure to make sure you are getting proper fuel pressure? If it will start with starting fluid then it has to be either fuel related or electrical. Are you getting power to your fuel relay? When you turn the key on can you hear your fuel pump come on? I would not use anymore starting fluid at all to try and start it other wise you cause major problems.

1997 chevy astro van has poor starting problems after it sits all

hello ralph...check the coolant temp sensor. It acts as a choke to richen fuel mixture when cold. If it doesn't work correctly, hard starting will occur. Once engine reaches operating temp, the problem is usually non-existent. also....
Worn spark plugs.
Fouled spark plugs.
Worn distributor cap and rotor.
Old ignition wires.
Low engine coolant level.
Faulty MAP sensor...any of these will effect cold starting....

Good luck...i hope this helps.
