Flickering Lights In my 1997 Maxima, the battery and brake dash lights are flickering occasionally at the same time. This happens after the car has been running for 10 minutes or more. When the lights flicker, the radio cuts out and the headlights brighten. I have had 3 mechanics look at it, and the alternator tested fine according to 2 of them. One said I needed to replace the alternator. One said it was the fuse box next to my battery and he cleaned out all the corrosion and terminals etc. It ran fine for 2 days after that. I even took it out of town. However, tonite the lights started flickering again. I recently had the battery replaced because I needed it. But the lights were flickering before that. What could possibly be the problem? Brian F

You do need an alternator. Nissan has a campaign on Maxima alternator in certain years such as 96-98 I believe. Go to your friendly Nissan dealer abd have them punch your VIN number into the NNA net. they will know and that will tell them if your vehicle applies by the VIN. I have seen the alternator on fire. There was fire inside of the alternator. Have it checked or the car can catch on fire.

1997 Nissan Maxima brake and battery lights on

John, I think I may have already answered this one.Check and clean battery connections and all grounds(loosen and re tighten all ground connections to give good contact), check belt for being loose. Nissan forums say it is a bad alternator.

My problem is dash lights come on when i brake lightly battery light flickers car dies all power out no lights nothing then back to normal

Sounds like a short in the brake light circuit that overloads the alternator.
I'd check / replace the bulbs for brake lights.

I had this happen once...
When you brake...your brake lights come on.
BUT, because the bottom of the bulb or bulbs have shorted, this provides a path for your running lights and dashlights to come on as well and the short tends to overload the alternator causing the flickering battery light.

Because the alternator is taking an overload like that...I'd have it and the battery checked for proper performance.

I'll bet the back bulbs or bulb sockets need attention...

Hope this helps...

98 Maxima - Battery and Brake Lights flickering

First off - 125K mi is nothing on that car (as long as you maintain it). The alternator is actually also the voltage regulator and this aspect of the alternator frequently fails before the actual alternator itself does and causes irregular voltage - so it makes sense you drove without the battery connected but you probably were having irregular power instead of a nice steady 14V (the other thing to know is that even if they do show 14V all the time the amperage may differ, both problems = change the alternator).

Lights started flickering battery light came on Dash lights and gages went crazy now wont start

Like you said, battery may be flat. You can check that with a multimeter.

Next check the alternator. Faulty alternator leads to uncharged battery.
