2000 toyota camry v6 code p0402

Possable fix

  • tkavanaugh Mar 17, 2009

P0402 indicates an excessive EGR flow condition.
I would check to see that the EGR is closing properly.
    Does it idle rough?
Excessive EGR would give you a bad idle, or a stall at idle if it was stuck open. Try This: Tap the top of the EGR valve with a small hammer, see if the idle improves. Please respond.

I copied and pasted the previous paragraph because I have same prob

Yes, I have 96 Avalon with these exact symptoms. Car starts and runs good until it warms up....like after running highway speeds and then slowing down to traffic lights, then Car idles really really rough. Almost like it wants to stall. I did tap on top of the EGR valve and it comes back to regular idle.....but then drive around the block and it is rough idle again. When this first started happening I did not get a CEL light that was coming on. But after a couple of weeks I now have the light on and when I do the code check it comes up with P0402.

The egr valve on that motor has a egr positioning sensor mounted on top. The sensor goes bad and the ecu can't determine the how far the valve is opening so it opens it too much. This causes surging of the engine under light throttle application. Also as stated above the egr can stick causing rough idle. Either way if you get the valve from the dealer it will come with the sensor solving both your problems.

Its either your egr valve, the egr vsv, or the vacuum modaultor, you will need a vacuum gauge and a scanner to test which you need.

P0402 1997 Toyota Camry 4 cyclinder 4 door, encountered P0402 has 3 months already. The car is drivable. What is the solution? Could replacement of a vsv value resolve this issue? Which part can I buy

Hi,
That is the code for Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow (EGR) Excessive Detected

Read more at: http://www.obd-codes.com/p0402
Copyright OBD-Codes.com

Go to the site and review what causes and can be checked to fix it.

I'd start w/cleaning the EGR valve - free fix - and then consider replacing the part. I'd look for USED parts @ a local Salvage/Wrecking yard vs. buying new, due the cost and the fact that this is an older car.

2000 toyota camry v6 code p0402

most of the time i see this code you want to check the vacume switching valve for the egr ,i hardly see it where the egr is the issue you may want a mechanic to check this you can check it yourself but you would need toyota diagnostic specific info where you would need to apply voltage to the sensor and check the operation of the valve restricting or letting air flow hope this helps

P1410 Code on a 2000 Toyota Camry

P1410 EGR Valve Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction
You may have to replace the sensor. If you get a chilton manual at an autoparts store, it will show you how to test the sensor with some test values in the book. The book should run about $20
