Horn This morning the horn started going off and will not stop. I don't have an alarm. I finally disconnected the battery cable just to get it to stop. When I put the battery cable back on it was still blowing so I pulled the fuse to the horn. I need to know how to fix the problem.
We have a '98 Montero Sport, and woke up to the horn going off - not intermittently but constantly. It wouldn't stop. It was the middle of the night, and no one had driven it in hours. Any idea what in the world would cause this?? How do u fix something like this?We have a '98 Montero Sport, and woke up to the horn going off - not intermittently but constantly. It wouldn't stop. Same problem with the same vehicle...took it to a mechanic to fix and they said that the horn was rusted and old...so they replaced it, cleaned up the wiring and 1 week later, the horn went off...AGAIN!Same problem with the same vehicle...took it to a mechanic to fix and they said that the horn was rusted and old...so they replaced it, cleaned up the wiring and 1 week later, the horn went off...AGAIN!

battery was dead. When I attempt to jump start it emergency flashers and horn start as soon as negative jumper cable is attached to ground. Stop only when battery dies or is disconnectedbattery was dead. When I attempt to jump start it emergency flashers and horn start as soon as negative jumper cable is attached to ground. you need to disconnect the sounder. they usually go like this when the internal battery is going, it triggers the alarm to go, so remove it and take it away. ie remove it completely away from the vehicle. and put some were where will not do any harm as the battery can become unstable. its a sealed unit, so you will need to replace it, but in there with the unit you should find another plug, this is for a horn type fitting. use an old horn and that will go off when the alarm goes of but you will not have any beeping or chirping from the horn.
Try this: SAVE radio code and remove the negative battery cable, turn on the headlight switch for 30 seconds, turn back off, start truck. That MAY re set the alarm relay.
If it is the horn, pull the horn fuse or relay. Does the vehicle start and drive, ok? Of course, pulling the fuse or relay isn't the proper fix. I'm just talking about killing the horn, where applicable.
The alarm system somehow got activated , this is usually because the battery becomes discharged or disconnected try doing this: Remove the key from the ignition disconnect the negative battery terminal put the key back in and turn to ON exit the truck and leave door open reconnect the battery terminal get in and leave door open, if the alarm horn stays off it should start.
First, Have your Battery tested. The Alarm systems in Ford made Products are very sensitive to Voltage. There are 3 systems in the car which interrupt power, the Alarm system (horn honking) and the Battery saver and finally the starter interlock system.
The Alarm system will do several things to disable the car from starting. It will reduce the voltage to the starter to prevent the engine from turning over. Some will even kill the ignition system so that if the starter is jumped, the car still won't start.
The Battery saver will disconnect any system to prevent discharge below a minimum threshold. Unfortunately, when the Alternator is working extra hard to charge a really bad battery: it will disconnect the charging circuit because it reads the Draw going to the Alternator to produce the power as a parasitic drain. Even at 70mph I have seen the charging disconnected and the vehicle coast to a stop when the electric runs out.
The last system worth mentioning is the Starter interlock. Under the dash and at the top of the Brake pedal lever is a switch. When you press the brake pedal, the switch allows the starter to crank provided the shifter is not in D or R. Drivers feet routinely hit this switch and either move it or break it. When it breaks it can short and drain the battery.
As you mentioned a Random problem, the Brake switch can shake to create a random problem if it is loose or broken. Your rear brake lights can be affected.
With the horn honking, at least part of your problem is the Alarm system. You can have a bad ignition switch too, which reads the keychip to disable the alarm. Your keychip may be bad and setting off the Alarm.
I had a new Lincoln myself which set off the Alarm randomly. I actually slept inside the car one night so I could turn off the alarm in the Apartment complex parking lot. Did'nt know if it would start again if the battery was disconnected and then reconnected. The Battery was shorted with less than 1000 miles on the car. It was a factory defective battery less than 3 months old.
But your car has many years and miles on it so it was worth mentioning the wear items. I hope my solution is helpful.
I couldn't turn off the security alarm on my 1999 Pathfinder as I replaced the battery, Solution: I read the solution here to disconnect the positive cable, open the driver's door, insert the key, then reconnected the positive cable, while honking, I turn the key to the left, to the right and to the left again while the door is still open. The honking stopped. Then I started the truck without a problem. Thank you for the hint.
Is the alarm causing the horn to honk? If so, you need to figure out what is causing the alarm to trigger, which could be any number of things. Or, the panic module could be failing. It is least likely to be the horn ring unless the only way you can get the horn to stop is by "beating the horn button on the steering wheel".
If it is, then you can replace the parts for the horn button, but you will need to get an assembly manual for the vehicle. Be sure to disconnect the battery before attempting to remove the airbag module. If it goes off, then you risk injury, and, they are not cheap to replace.
