In my own personal experience, you should first adjust the nuetral safety switch, it controls the reverse lights. After that, remove the jaw clip from the back of the tail ight, clean the connections, and the take a thin pick, and close the 2 metal pins together in the different sections of the jaw, with enough space between them to plug them back in. The connections inside the clip tend to expand away from the printed tail light curcuit over time.
Testimonial: "Hey, thanks for the tip! I will try it! every time I step on the brakes the "bulb out" light goes on & it's driving me nuts! thanks again."
SOURCE: how to change alternator in 1988 volvo 240 DL
To start with, make sure the belt is in good shape. Now would be an easy time to replace it. To remove the alternator, losen the swivel bolt on the top, then turn the long screw out to release belt tension (it is a 10 mm, the swivel bolt is 13mm, with a same sized nut). With the belt off, remove the supply power line (you disconnected the battery, right?), the smaller charge power line, and then remove the case to ground line. after that, remove the underside mount bolt, and the alternator should drop right out. Very easy job to do, maybe one hour.
SOURCE: i have a 1988 volvo 240 gl and my main fuel isnt getting power
There is a fuse up by the Battery alone in a white receptacle with red wires. It may not be blown but is corroded. Thoroughly clean it. This feeds the Fuel pump circuit. If tat is good the white fuel pump relay under the glove box may be bad.
