The speedometer and odometer stop working then start working with no discernable pattern. Speedometer needle moves quickly up and down and odometer blinks on and off then both stop working completely. When it comes back on it does the same thing...needle jumps and odometer blinks. When the Speedo/Odo stop working the the transmission does not shift properly. Is it the the instrument cluster, the ECU or both the problem?
If the speedo is not sending a speed the trans will go into back up mode and the trans will not shift normally check the speed sensor
That type of speedometer has a sensor and plastic gear attached to it in the trans. Most of the time the gear is worn out replace the gear and all should be fine.

check the fuses in your manual it will tell you which fuses are for the dash and replace them it sounds to me like they are blown! good luck

You probably have a sporadic fuse failure - go in and replace the fuses linked to these functions with NEW fuses and make sure there is no corrosion on the fuse box connections - this should solve.

check the relays under the kick panel on drivers side...maybe switch them around and see if that works....sometimes corrolas will do the same thing.check the ones under the hood also.

Also, the Check Engine light goes on an off intermittantly.
Speedometer jumps and falls, works ok at times ... Transmission shifts ruff goes to neutral when odometer malfunctions ...
