2000 Jeep cherokee steering wheel alignment

My son just installed a 4" suspension lift in his jeep. When they put it back together the steering wheel is cocked about 1/4 turn to the left when the wheels are straight. He says when driving it that the wheel will not stay center. You turn the wheel and he feels a small clunk when it hits center but then wants to rest to one side or the other. He thinks they may have not got the pitman arm lined up. Something about 4 notches in the arm so there are 4 possible places it could have gone together. Does he need a drop pitman are for the 4" lift of should he try recentering the steering wheel to the wheels? Also is this the cause of the clunk? THanks!

If you dropped the steering down 4 inches then it would put pressure on the drag link(rod going from pitman arm to steering) right? If it were me - a lowered pitman arm and a good solid alignment.

Just wondering why take the steering wheel off? How would this help?
I thought this is related to suspension. I could be wrong and if so I would like to be corrected. Maybe something I don't understand....

Do i need struts on the back end of my 2005 jeep grand cherokee

struts on the front contain shock absorbers as well as the pivot to turn the wheels where as on the rear they are just shock absorbers The replacement part is called an insert
so strut inserts on the front and shocks on the rear
the wheel alignment may be altered during the replacement process so it is suggested to have it done in suspension specialist shop

A 2000 jeep grand Cherokee limited, bad wobble I replaced tires, had them aligned and balanced replaced inner and outer tie-rod ends, track bar sway bar bushings, steering assist, ball joints .

wobble of the steering is a wheel alignment problem regardless of having an alignment done
if your vehicle has a "live"front axle ( not independent suspension) the alignment is fixed to toe in toe out settings by the manufacturer
however spring sag and pivot pin(king pin bearings)wear alters that setting
There are devices available on the market that can be fitted by accredited suspension service shops that allow the alteration of the castor and camber settings ( you have a castor wobble) so talk with these shops and get ideas of what you can do
if it has independent suspension these settings can be easily set and should be set to around 1 to 1 1/2 degrees positive with toe in set to around 1/8 ti 1/4 "
a point that most alignment shops don't mention is that the rear end has to be aligned first so that the steering wheels are in the same "track" otherwise the front alignment is a waste if time as the vehicle will tend to run sideways down the road
it is an extra cost but well wort the expense when chasing a problem
next point --if the cv or "U" joints are failing then they will tend to have hard stops when steering and this will set of steering problems
lastly , big wide tyres are hard to align because of the amount of rubber on the road and to get the comprise between correct alignment and reduced tyre wear is hard to achieve

I have a 98 grand cherokee v8 5.2l. When I was pulling out of driveway there was a crunch that came from the front driver side. When I tried to drive the jeep shook like crazy. There is no shaking from the...

Hello, it could any be number of things in the front suspension that could cause this. From control arm bushings & ball joints to bearings. I would have your Jeep put on a lift and given a good inspection before you do any more driving. I hope this helps.

My grand limited jeep cherokee shakes when I am going over 45 mphs and I hit a bump in the road. How can I fix it. I had the track bar replace front end alinement two new tires tires balance and rotate now...

Hitting a bump and then having oscillations of the steering whell is a sure sign of worn bushings, tie rod ends or an internally worn power steering box. The only way to find out is to jak the front of the car up and then rest the car on jack stands from the FRAME of the far. Then grasp each tire / wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock pushing and pulling while checking for any signs of movement or looseness. Your checking the ball joints, control arms, wheel or spindle bearings and tie rods for wear. Also grasp the tire at 6 and 12 o'clock positions and check for movement in sterring components. The people that did the alignment should have mentioned that you had steering or suspension component wear. They also should have stated that they can not do an alignment without repairing / replacing the worn components. Any wear in steering or suspension parts will cause the symptom that you described. If you just had the alignment.... take the car back to the shop and have them re-check the suspension parts for wear. Most alignments come with a 30 day warranty.

Thanks for using FixYa.

I have a 2000 jeep cherokee sport with factory rims whats the biggest tire i can use without rubbing thank you for your input todd

the bigger tire you put on up above 235/75/15 will change the handling of your jeep and will wear out the front steering an suspension parts.I've seen what 31/10-50/15 have done to several jeeps. It just takes the life out of a jeep, even by putting the correct tires back on afterwards when they have traded it in where I work,The handling is not there any more.

Steering is no longer tight, there seems to be to

At this point, you need to look underneath and check for play while someone works the wheel back and forth. Then, jack up each wheel and put a bar under it and try to lift the tire while someone watches the ball joints for play. All front end components should have very little or no play. Any that do need to be replaced. (that goes for bushings as well)

Suspension?

have the sway bar looked at in the back. if it is loose or broken it will sway. it is the bar connecting the two rear wheels. there are upgrade kits that offer a heavier bar. Also check rear tire pressure. the tires will roll out if too low a pressure is aboard.

Suspension and steerin wheel

It is difficult to just assess wut is causing the suspension knock. U will have to go under the vehicle or let someone who is experience about this do it. Go under the vehicle and check the entire suspension system, steering ends, rack ends, ball joionts, rubber bushings etc. Well u said u have changed ur shocks but no difference. As for the squeaks, this might be coiming from the universal joint from the steering column. Like I said they really have to be inspected.
