If the transmission is slipping it could be 1 of many issue. The first that comes to mind is that the band is just lose and needs to be tightened. The next is if the engine is at high rev when it happens the transmission pump could be going or the filter on the pump could be clogged. This would be very hard to trouble shoot over the internet. Also the gear it self could be bad. Hope I have given you some ideas. If the transmission is slipping it could be 1 of many issue. If you have an automatic trans, sounds like it is slipping, Try changing the trans filter and fluid, but your trans may have to be rebuilt. Only other thing could be brakes dragging/stuck.
Do you have an OBDII scanner to check the real temperature? Want to make sure it's not overheating. If it's normal, could be your temperature sensor starting to go out, or ignition switch. Any check engine lights? If so, get the code for me, can go from there. At a constant speed, you sure it wasn't a misfire instead? Check your trans fluid, make sure it's full. I was just in Tahoe, pretty sad not much snow at all.
Sounds like the clutch, if a standard trans, needs to the be replaced. If it's an automatic, you need to take it in for diagnosis. Your trans. might be going bad, slipping, may just be low on fluid, if it is use some Lucas trans nonslpi and the proper tranny fluid to fill it to the proper level. Add the fluids and test drive bfore going to the shop, unless the tranny is fuul allready.
The forward gears slip but dose the reversr gear slip as well if not your problem is either the forward band is worn out ,,,,or the forward pump is playing up and also it could be the thing that starts it all off is the filter in the auto sump is clogged up with metal or drive band dust is the colour of the auto oil dark or dirty..
When was the trans oil last changed.
I think you mean they told you that you need to replace the torque converter , which transfers the torque from the engine to the trans
it could be the torque converter but also could be the bands wearing down in the trans
