Fuse or relay are all the wires correct at the bulb clusters make sure these are fitted correct and the bulbs are the correct type either single or double pole bulbs

Hello. Check relay RMI5 in REM unit located in left side rear of cargo area. As you look at it it's to the right of the central electrical connector 5th from bottom. Matt

SOURCE: I have a 2001 Volvo

My 2001 S60 just had the same issue. The "check brake light" error message on the dash and the brake lights not illuminating ( the upper center glass brake light would). I found that both bulbs had failed which I replaced. The fuse was okay but still the error message was found on the dash when the brake peddle was pressed. I purchasing a dealer $30.00 brake light relay and the problem is fixed. However, there isn't a diagram anywhere that shows which relay was for the brake light relay. In my 2001 S60, the relay is in the trunk, beneath the driver side removable upholstered cover. The relay panel has ~ 10ea of the same relays and a few other odd sizes. There is a vertical column of relays on the left and right. I found the brake light relay is located between two other relays on the upper right column. It was difficult to reach due to a larger relay on it’s right.

Hi em1cl, I suggest you check fuse #D3, 15A in the fuse block located in the trunk.

In my own personal experience, you should first adjust the nuetral safety switch, it controls the reverse lights. After that, remove the jaw clip from the back of the tail ight, clean the connections, and the take a thin pick, and close the 2 metal pins together in the different sections of the jaw, with enough space between them to plug them back in. The connections inside the clip tend to expand away from the printed tail light curcuit over time.

Brake lights dont work on my 2001 volvo s80. All fuses and relays are good. The bulbs are good too. The third brake light and parking lights work too. Turn dignals are fine too. Whats my problem?

Sounds like the brake switch on floor under brake pedal, needs adjusting or its bad. When you put on the brakes, it sends power to rear stop lights. The pedal hits this switch. Good-Day! ( if all else is good )
