I have a 2003 chevrolet cavalier, manual transmission and have lost 2nd, 4th and reverse. I still have 1st, 3rd and 5th gears. The gear shift is really loose and I was actually able to get reverse to connect at one point after the issue popped up. Additionally, this problem happened quickly, basically between my house (where I had to go into reverse to back out of the driveway) and when I got out of the store. The gear shift felt fine on the drive over, but was loose when I get back into the car. Any ideas (other than "it's a transmission problem") about what the cause could be? Thanks.
Sounds like one of the levers inside the transmission is either broken or otherwise disengaged. Remove the shifter to see if you can see any obvious reason.

it is very likely this is being cuased by worn shift linkage and not the transmission itself, check the shift rods and bushings for being excessively loose, also any trans repair shop will do a test drive and give you a free diagnosis in hope of getting the work, things are tight right now. please rate this.

sounds like the shifter linkage has worn and not working properly need to lift in air and inspect the linkage

Sounds like a bad countershaft bearing. The trans will need removed and disassembled to fix it.

You need to remove top off gearbox and with a pry bar or screw driver pull the selector back into neutral Your gearlever has popped out of selector Gearbox does not need to be removed

OK, one additional twist to this. I got into the car today to go meet up with a friend and all gears were present and accounted for ... until I drove about a mile and a half. At that point I lost 2nd and 4th gear again (and I am assuming reverse as well).
So this one was due to the shifter linkage needing to be replaced.
