SOURCE: The check engine light stays on or comes back on

Hi:
Your P0446 code is a Evap vent valve code: Evap vent valve has only one purpose. It closes in order to seal the vent so the EVAP system can pressurize and ensure there are no leaks. Evap vent valve is usually supplied Batt. voltage with key on. The ECM's driver controls the ground, and when grounded, activates the valve (closing it). If the ECM detects a short to ground, and open,or a short to battery voltage on the control circuit, P0446 will set. Code also may refer to ECM detecting that EVAP system is unable to achieve or maintain vacuum during test.
copyscape.gif Symptoms There will be no obvious symptoms to driver, other than MIL illumination.
Causes A code P0446 could mean one or more of the following has happened:

  • Faulty vent valve
  • Open, short or excessive resistance on Vent valve control circuit
  • Blockage of vent valve
  • Bad PCM
Possible Solutions With a P0446 OBD-II trouble code, here are some things to try:
  • Replace Vent valve
  • Repair open, short, or resistance problem in control circuit
  • Repair open, or short, or resistance problem in power circuit
  • Replace PCM

SOURCE: Got a P1404 Fault on

  • Hi Jeff,

  • What causes this error code is an EGR fault. If you remove the EGR and give it a real good cleaning and clear the code there is a good chance the code will stay away. Those EGR's get real clogged.

  • There is a possibility that a simple good cleaning will not keep the code away in which case I would recommend replacing the EGR.

  • If you have any comments please feel free to leave them here.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.
Regards, Tony

Cleared check engine light. How do I pass smog check?

Clearing the Check Engine light does not repair anything - it only turns off the light and clears the error codes. The problem(s) that caused the light to occur are still going to be present and the light will probably come back on, anytime from a few minutes to a few days depending on the problem(s). What you NEED to do is to extract the error codes that come with the light and take the corrective action(s) to repair the deficiencies. That will probably make the vehicle able to pass smog checks. Of course, now that you've cleared the Check Engine light, you've also erased the error codes, so you will need to wait for it to return to get the data you need for repairs.

Not passing smog, no code or engine light

Its going to be tough to find the problem without access to a 4 gas machine. Especially if there are no trouble codes in the computer.
If the fuel mixture is rich it should set a code for one or both O2 sensors. Same thing if the EGR is not working, etc.
One thing that could cause problems is the thermostat not getting the engine up to normal temp.

I think that's one of the o2 sensor. But try unhooking ur battery terminals for five to ten minutes and see if that doesn't reset it.

Check engine light comes on flashes 3 times

first you have to diagnose the cause of trouble.
How to get the codes on a 1998-1999 Dakota: Depress the trip reset and trip/odometer switches, and, while holding them, turn the ignition to ON/RUN, and wait about 5 seconds. This sends the car through a short self-test sequence that lights all segments of the odometer and shift selector read-out (where applicable). It will then display the stored error codes.
If that doesn't work, try holding in the trip/odometer button while doing the key on/off cycle 3 time. If that doesn't work, some people have reported success by doing the key on/off cycle 10 times instead of 3.
you are unable to pull the trouble codes yourself, wether it be because you aren't doing the procedure right or perhaps your truck doesn't have that feature, most auto parts stores have scanners and will pull your trouble codes for free. I know for sure that Autozone does this, and have heard that many others do as well. (They do this for free because they are hoping that if it turns out to be a bad oxygen sensor, for example, that you will purchase an oxygen sensor from them.) You can also purchase a scanner of your own;

look at your distributor cap while standing on the driver's side of the vehicle.
Start at number 1, which is labelled on the cap, and go
