Except when I first fill up, my fuel guage always shows empty. The reserve fuel light is flashing also. When I first fill up it will sometimes show full for a day at the most, then goes down to empty quickly. My gas mileage is fine, and everythig else seems to be working properly.
It sounds as if the fuel tank sending unit is faulty. This is a small float connected to a variable resistor on the fuel pump/sending unit assembly. Unfortunately this assembly is fairly expensive (over $300) and the fuel tank may need to be removed to replace it.

The sending unit in the tank has gone bad. The tank will have to be removed, and the sender be replaced.

Go to Auto Zone and they'll scan the truck for you for free. If it's the speed sensor, that's not hard to replace, just unclip the wire harness and remove the old speed sensor on the left rear side of the put put shaft to the transmission. Auto zone caould give you more finer details on to how to do it your self instruction.
The fuel gauge sensor is a part of the fuel pump and that's going to be costly. If your luck it could just be a stuck float and in time the float me start working again. The other thing to is to check the wire harness from the frame rail to the gas tank, after time the winter salt carrodes the connection and it may need to be replaced.
I found most of the time when we work on changing the fuel pump, 65% of the time it's only the wire harness and the pump is fine. But customers always get the new pump and wire harness.
Good luck and hope this helps.

Mine did this too... Bought a new fuel sensor for 50 bucks and it's perfect now... if you don't want to spend the cash take your tank off take out you gage and check the floater and all the connections... could have just gummed up or disconnected

Have a look at the fuel gauge wire, where it is connected on to wiring at the top off the fuel tank. It may be corroded.

Probably needs a new fuel sender unit. They cost about $100. The install may be simple if there is a access door in the floor of your vehicle - otherwise you need to drop the gas tank. Expect to pay $400 to $600 to have a mechanic do it.

Thanks. That was my suspicion, but wanted to get a 2nd opinion. I've priced the part with AutoZone, it's less than $40. Haven't got a quote on the installation yet though and I don't think I want to pull the fuel tank myself.
