Hard to start, battery dies, rattles loudly when idling and driving. Quieter when more gas added, but rattled very loudly then died while idling for 10 minutes. Problem continuous for months. Yesterday died, can't restart.
I think you had better have a local shop inspect this for a failed engine connecting rod.
Harmonic Balancer common 3.8 problem.Just changed another one yesterday. They can knock like hell, making one think the bottom end is falling out.
Sound like timing chain had slack in it. causing timing chain slip time, causing broke time chain.remove valve cover see if lifter will move when you turn crank shaft pulley bolt using 15 metric 1/2 socket and 1/2 wrench. reason i said timing chain my 98 chevy lumina did the same thing, first i lost oil pressure, then engine turn off did not fire any more, my start knocking first like yours, when timing chain broke not starting.remove valve cover turn crankshaft rocker arms not moving.i probably buy another motor with in 2 to three months.95 silhouette had 3.8 or 3.1 engine. mmy engine is a 3.1 engine which is bad about camshaft breaking due to intake manifold leak causing antifreeze dilute engine oil cause camshaft bearing failure broken camshaft and time chain breaking.remove valve cover see if rocker arms moving.
SOURCE: Truck starts, runs for 5-10 seconds, then dies
take out your mass airflow sensor located on air intake pipe and clean with brake cleaner also is your engine light on?
SOURCE: fuel problem
fuel pump sound like a good place to start it may not be getting enough pressure to the fuel thus not sending enough of it at a time to explain why it runs good sometime i think it is primeing and filling the lines once it shuts off and so for a litle while it has enough gas but one you use the gas that was ready in the line it can't get enough to run correctly. have it tested.
SOURCE: Exhaust pipe rattles when car idles. Had muffler
Check the heat shield on the Catalytic Converter, after a few years they start to rust off and rattle. Crawl under the Pathfinder and bang along the Converter and muffler area and see where it's coming from.
Good chances are, it's from the heat shield since you already had everything changed from the Cat back.
Good luck and hope this helps.
SOURCE: starts hard and rattle noise under car
I have had both of these situations happen to me and they are completely unrelated.
The Rattle: If you have the factory wheels with the olds center caps, take them off. My husband tightened every screw on the car until he took the center caps off my wheels, and lo and behold, NO MORE RATTLE.
The Hard Starting: If you notice it starts hard and the RPMs are high, your throttle cable is sticking. I have this exact same problem with my 99 Intrigue GLS. The only way I can get it to quit is start and restart the car until it quits. Obviously not the best solution, but I would check your cable first before trying anything else.
