When I let go of the gas on my car I hear a rattle right next to the front driver side wheel. Sounds like a machine gun. The engine itself sounds fine. Seems maybe there could be something sliding up against another piece of the car, but why would that happen only when letting go on the gas? Actually, using the breaks make it go away to. When the car is idle you cannot hear it. Almost like it's in the break system or perhaps somewhere else around there. 185,000 miles on it. Engine light is on, but I pretty sure this has to do with something else. Thanks!

Subaru's are notorious for having exhaust rattles from the heat shields on the catalytic converter.
Does the noise go away or lessen when the engine gets hot? I know it seems unrelated, but on my 2002 Impreza it made a lower groan sound at first when ever I would shift gears as the engine speed (RPM) dropped. I put up with it for a year then finally I got a stainless steel hose clamp from the hardware store and put it around the heat shield.
Truly I should just get a new catalytic converter, they are around $200, but the hose clamp stopped the noise.
This might not have anything to do with it your noise. It is a cheap and easy fix though.
Good Luck

Drop in to an Autozone, or Pep Boys, or similar big parts store & they will usually scan for codes free. This will hopefully eliminate all the guess work, or at least point everyone in right direction for better diagnosis. If not obvious from codes what the problem is, get back to us and we'll help you out.
Testimonial: "Thanks for the great suggestion . I'll have Autozone read the codes on Monday. Thanks again!"
