You must have the dealer scan the system with a special tool and based on what is read with the scanner diagnose the problem.

From experience I have found that the message "gearbox fault" is not always gearbox related - It can be from faults within the engine causing the gearbox to miscalculate load etc and show as a g/bx error. Before committing yourself to great expense get the car on a diagnostic and check that the eng+ g/box. If nothing definite shows up carefully check your engine for misfires/air leaks etc. as these can often be undetected/recorded faults until they reach a critical level. Hope this helps

SOURCE: x-type jaguar automatic (gear box fault)

I have a 2002 X type (2 litre. done 44000 miles), dash showed gear box problem, (red circle light up). I pulled out and turned the engine off. 5 minutes later turned the engine on. The engine running but the car would not drive either in drive or reverse. Turned the engine off again and on the car driving but not much power. The care is taken to the Jag. dealer and told is misfiring + some gear box faults. Suggesting to change some coils and see (cost about £200+). also possible need to change the gear box costing about £2500+. Please advice. Shall I go ahead with the repair? Should I part exchange.

S type jaguar has jerky chang up some times from 2 to 3 rd gear on aotomatic gear box

Depending how long this has been going on When you completely run the battery down it takes several hours of driving to completely reset the computer. I would give it some time before I panic. I am lucky as my Lesaber turns the lights off after ten minutes if the key is off.and even interior lights off if I leave the car door open.

Jaguar X SE 2.5 gearbox problem

hey johnhoile,

Sorry to break the bad new to you, put you most likely need a transmission depending on what codes are stored in the system. I have dont numerous automatic transmission on x-types all they all started with a gear box fault light on.

If the codes have something to do with a incorrect gear ration that is a guarantee red flag for a new transmission

Hi Jagman

I suspect this could be your battery at fault.

Get it heavy discharge tested first.

Good Luck.

On rare occasions warning light on dash indicates gearbox problem

I just can't see the gear box itself being bad if all is still in working order. I'd be checking the sensor that's sending this message.
