Mitsubishi Colt fuel gauge fault

Colt, fuel gauge dropped to zero and low fuel light on even though the tank was 75% full of fuel. Filled to 100%, gauge hasn't moved. Could this be a failed fuse or something more serious?

The floater is the fault which is in the fuel tank.

OK appreciate your advice, sounds like a big job to fix so will have to see what to do about it. The fault seems to be intermittent which is more puzzling.

SOURCE: 2002 Avalanche gas gauge problems

Gm has a real problem with fuel tank sending units. That is what is wrong. You need a fuel tank sending unit. You can only get them aftermarket with the whole fuel pump module, but you can buy them seperate if you buy it from the dealer.

SOURCE: fuel gauge problem

The nature of the gauge is that it should behave with a linear taper between full and empty. If it works when full but then malfunctions as the level drops, the variable resistor in the sending unit which is housed along with the fuel pump in the gas tank is almost certainly at fault. The sending unit will have to be replaced to fix the problem. Expect this to be an expensive endeavor.

SOURCE: gas gauge

The float that moves the gas hand is possibly stuck in the tank. If there's isn't an access hole in the rear of the vehicle you'll have to drop the tank. Unless it becomes free on it's own. Hope this is helpful. Please rate. Thanks

SOURCE: 2002 Chevy Suburban: Fuel gauge reads empty, tank is half full

Youre gauge is controlled by a plunger in the fuel tank which is attached to the sensor and the fuel gauge. it sounds like when the plunger goes down half way its either getting stuck down lower then it should. Needs replacing. Any mechanic can do this install for you.

SOURCE: Full tank of gas and getting low fuel indicator on dash

Bad fuel level sensor. Unfortunately it is located inside the gas tank. Fairly common problem on GM's. Due to sulphur in fuel. Corrodes the sensor tabs. Expensive to have repalced and NOT a do-it-yourself project, unless you have dropped a tank before.

2013 Kia Optima. Fuel gauge shows 1/16th of a tank and the low fuel light is not on. Engine shut down. Out of gas. Add gas. Car starts up. What would cause the gauge to misread in this way?

most fuel gauge readings are not that accurate anyway so its out of fuel but not what the is guage reading. but the fuel level sensor in the tank may be at fault sound like its the prob but the instument pack should put the low fuel light on if its fitted on your vehicle spec but not always fitted even though the warning light is present hope this helps

Mitsubishi colt 2000i fuel gauge not working when you inset the sending unit in the tank.i have changed the sending unit but the problem continues,

Try earthing out the wire that goes to the back sender unit and watch the gauge in the dash,it SHOULD go right up to full if not it will be a wire problem or gauge.

I have a Hyundai Elantra 2001. The low fuel light came on and won't go off even though the car if full of gas.

If gauge still shows empty and light is on then inside tank there is a arm thats prob just stuck remove lower rear seat and will see entry to tank gauge has about 3 to 4 screws open and check if arm is down or floating .

98 oldmobile cutlass fuel gage will go to full when filled but as soon as it uses 1/4 of a tank it (the gage) drops and i dont know how much gas is in there

there is a fault with the sending unit in the fuel tank, if the gauge can move to full when you fill the tank it is good.
only way i know how to test the sending unit is to take it out of the fuel tank and hook a meter to the float wires, move the float manually and the meter will go to zero if the unit is bad

Does the fuel tank in a 2004 Mitsubishi Diamante needs to be full in order for the gauge to work?

Hi Marglitt, The gauge should work with any amount of fuel and indicate how much is in the tank. What does happen on modern cars, is that the gauge will fail to move if a small amount of fuel is filled into the tank. This is a measure taken as most petrol driven vehicles have the pumps immersed in fuel, which helps cool the pump and prolongs the life of the unit. The reserve light may remain on if the fuel level has not risen above the operational level of the same warning light. Fuel gauge registers full when filled with gas....drive 20mi and then drops to zero...still gas in the tank

The sender unit in the tank is the most likely cause. To test the panel unit, remove the wire from the fuel tank unit and gound it. The panel gauge needle should move up full scale to hot. Remove the wire from the ground and the gauge should return to empty. If this test is ok, the tank unit needs to be replaced.

1990 toyota camry gas gauge quit working

Either fuel sensor is bad or coated with sulfur residue from inferior gas. Try a can of Sea Foam gas treatment OR can of Techuron concentrate. Both available at auto parts and , of course, Walmart ! Add to full gas tank, drive 75 - 100 miles and see if all is well. If not, condide4 sensor change
