How to engage four wheel drive on 1991 chevy silverado 1500

A hunting truck we recently purchased will not engage the 4wheel drive. When put in 4 low or 4 high neither make the front wheels pull. It doesnt appear to have any hubs to be locked externally just the shifters on the floor. the lady we bought it from is selling it cause her husband died and she doesnt need it. I asked her but she don't know and I sure don't know. Can anyone help?

Your truck should have a solenoid attached to the front axel (more so to the right side). Unplug the solenoid and probe the harness. It should be two wires if not tell me. But it should have twelve volts on one and ground on the other (with the 4wd in-gauged) If that is fine remove the solenoid and see if it actuates when put it into 2wd and 4wd. If that checks out then the problem is either somewhere inside the front axel or maybe the transfer case. But the way you described it I would start with the front axel.

I have a 2008 chevy silverado 4.3 wt. When switching into four wheel low it makes a very loud noise when engaging. Like it is kicking in to hard. But it does not do this when going into four wheel high.

because when engaging low range on 4 wheel drive vehicle you should be standing still.

You probably have a bad encoder motor.It is located on the side of the transfer case on the drivers side.It is black.The other problem they had with these was the switch but you have already replaced this so your next thing is the encoder motor.Hope this helps.Good luck.

When i put my 03 chevy 4x4 in 4 wheel drive there is a loud popping sound and 4wheel low truck wont move it a push button 4 wheel

you may have a broken transfer box or a damaged locking hub on the wheels that arent used in 4x4 mode, i.e. if your car is FWD unless its in 4-low, check the rear locking hubs for failure. Other wise it sounds like a transmission fault in the aforementioned transfer box or differential.
