Trac off light- Hi, mom has a 2004 Chevy Impala and just started it and noticed a light on the dash came on reading, "Trac off". Do you know what this means? The dealer is trying to get my 73yr old mom to bring it in that it needs repairs. I doubt it. Any ideas? Thanks

It does need attention as the light has come on
what you need to do is to have the fault codes read ( free at most auto spares shop) then armed with that knowledge , find an accredited service center that has knowledge on your make of vehicle and get it fixed
The trac on /off light indicates a problem that does affect trac stability in bad situations and may result in your mum loosing control of the car when those circumstances occur

Hi Deborah.
this is all i could find out from the internet.
ABS and Trac OFF usually indicate a dirty or faulty ABS wheel sensor. You'll have to scan for the codes to see why the check engine light is on.
the abs and trac is the wheel speed sensor, you will probably have to replace the hub.
Have you already checked your owners manual for troubleshooting? If not, page 3-35 has the section about your "Trac Off" message.

"If there's a brakesystem problem that is specifically
related to tractioncontrol, the tractioncontrol
system will turn off and the warning light will come
on. If your brakes begin to overheat, the traction
controlsystem will turn off and the warning light will
come on until your brakes cool down...
If the tractioncontrolsystem warning light comes on
and stays on for an extended period of time when the
system is turned on, your vehicle needs service."

not sure if this helps you out but its all i could find out.
sorry if its of no help to you.

The traction control works in tandom with the ABS system. You have two ABS sensors...one on the front right wheel and one on the front left. You'll have to take the wheels off to get to them. Once the wheels are off, look in the back side of the wheel bearings and you will see a ring with teeth like protrusions... kinda like "little Gears". If you are not sure where to look just follow the CV axles from the transaxle to the spindles. They are located on the ends of the cv axles. If you notice and debris or grease on the gears then clean it off with some brakes clean. Also check the wires leading to the wheel speed sensors (aka abs sensors). be sure they are intact. The rings may be built into the wheel bearings themselves and if that is the case, you will have to replace the wheel bearings. There could also be a problem with the body control module. It would help alot to get it scanned if you feel you may have to replace something. No sense in shooting in the dark try to replace parts that don't need replacing. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: 2003 Chevy Impala Service Traction Sytem show on Dash

I can't answer the question about the gas fumes, but I had the same problem last year with the "Service Traction Sysytem" message and the Trac and ABS lights coming on in my Impala. Mine turned out to be because of a bad wheel bearing, that was causing the ABS and traction system not to work. I'm not sure if you've experienced this, but another thing that would happen with mine was that I would go to brake and have a hard time depressing the brake pedal, almost like it was pushing back. That is the point when the Trac and ABS lights came on.

I had this same problem . with my monte carlo . I was told from a mechanic buddy of mine to replace the battery wires as well as the brass mount that the wire goes to by the fuse box . it worked . he told me that with the littlest corrosion that the key would not get enough amps to engage the starter

First check fluid level on transmisson , if ok if the fluid is brown and smells lie onions then it needs to have the filter and transmisson fluid changed, and all the fluid needs to be changed not just the 3 or 4 quarts in the pan, the filter kit cost $14.99 plus 12 quarts of Dexron III fluid.

Have u checked the catalytic convert in the exhaust or the muffler to be sure they are not plugged. If one of them are it will not allow fuel to be pulled into the engine. I had the same problem with my truck and when I put starting fluid in it would run.

Don't know if your asking about a sensor, or an idiot light on dash.
Check your owners manual in the glove box, it will show what each idiot light means.

there's a button on the right side of the steering wheel that says serv push that button. It's put right there for when they use them as police cars you can cut the headlights off. You will probably notice that dash lights are on.
