Brake pedal went straight to the floor without resistance

I had gone to town to run some errands, parked the car and put the emergency brake on. Came back out and got into the car and went to pull out of the parking space and needed to apply the brakes and the pedal went to the floor, it had no resistance. I did get the car stopped. I was able to get the car home. What is going on, I didn't have any dashboard activity indicating a problem nor did my brakes give me any indication that something was wrong. My trip going out, the brakes worked fine...then suddenly this happens!?

SOURCE: Emergency break pedal stuck to floor, but break is disengaged

sounds like your brake cable has broken or there is something damaged in the pedal assembly.........try pulling on the release handle and move the e-brake pedal back to its off position by hand at the same time.(you may have to tie it in this position to keep it up)If that doesnt work there is a sensor on the pedal assembly that you should be able to bypass by either disconecting the wire(1 wire system) or connecting the two wires together (2 wire system)Especially if your truck is a standard the e-brake is an important safety feature,so if these steps fix the light and dinging problem you should still take the steps to have it repaired.
hope this helps.........Good Luck!

SOURCE: 2000 suburban dashboard brake idiot light won't go out

howdy, when the solid red brake light is on without an ABS light, it is usually low brake fluid in the master cylinder reservoir or the brake fluid level sensor in the reservoir is stuck or defective. let me know if this helps you ...... good luck.

SOURCE: parking brake pedal goes to floor

The disc brake pads are NOT used for the parking brake. The parking brake uses mini-drum type shoes inside the rear disc rotor.

How can I realse emergency brake if cable cutting for tahoe 2009

With an assistant, release the parking brake cable tension by pulling straight back on the intermediate cable at the cable-to-cable union until the parking brake control sector (of the brake pedal) rotates to a stop. then insert a 4mm retainer pin in the parking brake control pedal to keep it from retracting on you.
Disconnect the cable running from the brake pedal to the cable-to-cable union underneath the car.
Then replace the damaged or severed cable that controls either the left or right rear parking brake shoes.

Emergency break pedal on floor

it could be the emergancy brake cable or something on the pedal broke off that held the cable to the pedal. if the pedal is broken, go to the dealer and get a new one ordered, if its the cable, they are horrible to replace so just send it to someone. you will have a heck of a time doing it yourself.

How do I adjust the emergency brake?

Over here we call it a parking brake - hardly any of our cars are autos.

Parking brakes usually connect to the rear disc brake calipers but some manufacturers use a small drum brake in the disc centre for parking purposes due to the complexity of the caliper with integral parking brake.

When adjusting a parking brake it is important in most designs for the cable to be adjusted only to remove any free play without moving the caliper levers from the backstops and then if the parking brake lever or pedal travel is excessive it must be because of wear or other faults. Sometimes that basic requirement must be taken with a pinch or two of "experienced" salt...

Ford have a self adjusting parking brake I have experience of. A spring within the system preloads the cable eliminating all slack in the cable so the cable moves the caliper levers from the first. The main problem with the system is the preload spring is sometimes strong enough to overcome the resistance of the caliper spring and cause a binding brake. No manual adjustment was provided.
In that case I find fabricating and fitting brackets to anchor additional return springs to the calipers is a must.

1998 Lincoln Town Car Signature. Parked it and now will not come out of park, and brake lights do not light up. Running lights, turn signals, hazards all work.

you have to press the brake pedal for your car to shift from park.what this does is actuate a solenoid on your steering column with the same electrical signal that lights your brake lights. since you have no brake lights either, all you have to do is replace the brake light fuse and you should be back in buisness.

I have a 1997 Town Car and it runs perfectly fine until i park it, then try to start it and put it in gear, it will start up just fine with no noises, and the battery, lights, and everything else is fine,...

Check to see if your brake lights come on when the brake pedal is depressed. If they do not come on, the problem could be the brake light switch or associated connector/wiring. The brake light circuit controls the solenoid (control) that allows the shifter to come out of the park position. The brake light switch is connected to the brake pedal arm. You May have to remove a cover panel (three plactic retainers) to see the switch. A possible solution is to turn the ignition key to the 1st position, then shift the car into neutral. This should allow you to start the car and shift into any gear. HOWEVER, you may not have brake lights (use hand signals) and when you park, use the emergency brake after stopping, shif the car to neutral and not PARK. This will allow use of your car until you can get it properly fixed.

Braking system

That guy may be right. To check booster function, press firmly on the brake pedal with the engine off, then start the car. If the pedal sinks and inch or two, then the booster is probably OK.
If it was mine, I'd take it outside of town to somewhere with little or no traffic and test the brakes pretty brutally on a straight road with a loose grip on the steering wheel to check for directional problems.
Something that might have happened is that one wheel had a stuck wheel cylinder that suddenly got unstuck, causing a drop in pressure momentarily. I have also had the entire brake material on one pad separate from the backing plate which caused the same thing - at an intersection, with a very busy highway that wasn't crowded for once. I shot right across the intersection, drove home carefully and checked my shorts.
If you can't find anything yourself, I wouldn't hesitate to take it to an honest service shop (in the US, check local BBB) since that is something that shouldn't be put off.
