loosen the alternator and push the alternator to-wards the engine, put your new belt on ,fitting around the 3 pulleys once fitted look and see that the belt is in line.If your happy the belt is lined put a small bar between the engine and alternator and force the alternator out towards the front this should tension your belt tighten bolts on alternator.;at the longest point between two pullys in the middle of the belt move belt up and down with fingers if tension is right it should not move more than about 150ml,hope this helps you.adrian

SOURCE: snapped alternator belt

if its a similar engine to the standard vw's then you can bend the spring loaded tensioner right behind the alternator with a spaneer (shifting spanner works well) and it loosens the belt.

SOURCE: ed the timing belt, will the engine be ok or not

Yes you did lose the timing belt,I dont know much about newer Volkswagons but the older models have a non-interference head, wich means the valves don't go low enough to hit the tops of the pistons,I can't imagine that they have changed so you're should be good with a new timing belt.As far as expense goes the belt shouldn't be to much but unfortunatley there is a good deal of labor involved on the install, but shop around and you should be able to find a shop that will give you a reasonable rate compared to a VW service center.

Hyundai excel 99 how to change power steering belt

Look at all the smaller pulleys. One of them will be tensioned either on a spring or slotted mount. U can loosen the bolt and adjust the pulley in/out. Place the belt on and use a piece of wood or handle on hammer and apply leverage to the tensioner pulley in the opposite direction u lossened it and tighten bolt back down. The pulley may be spring mounted and could require tension inwards to get the belt on.

One of the smaller pulleys will adjust some either by bolt or spring mount to adjust for the belt.

MY BELTS SNAPPED AND BENT PULLEY IS IT TENSIONER OR PULLEY NEEDS REPLACING

Kind of a vague question here. I am assuming you are speaking of the pulley that is attached to the tensioner is bent. Either way I would suggest in replacing the tensioner. They have just he pulley you can take off your tensioner and rebuild it, but it is easier for the cost, and as a point of preventive maintnace to replace the entire tensioner, for the entire tensioner either 4 cyl or 6 is around 96$

I have 2003 Passat with 140K on the clock, 8 months ago it developed a screeching noise turning the wheel left and right when stationary like the belt was screeching. The garage could not see a problem,...

the screeching noise could be rubber deposits on the belt pulley or pulley bearings for the power steering pump BUT its also a big clue that the timing belt tensioner is about to give up...CHECK BOTH please.....

having driving mine for a yr now, noticed some pulleys without a belt but never thought much about it. Thought aircon just needed service till the belt for alternater, fan, power steering snapped, the mechanic told me then that the other missing one was for aircon. Two belts plus cam belt????? driving too many things ! so just check to see if all belts are still there, they snap easily `cause of the multi purposes....
