2000 Chevy Impala smells like gas

My 2000 chevy impala has started smelling of gasoline. I can really smell it inside of the car, but when I get out I smell a strong oder of gasoline. I have had other friends say they can smell it too. It usually starts on the first time, but recently it must be cranked a couple of times before it starts. Any ideas? Thanks for the time.

Check under the hood on the side of the fuel rail, the fuel pressure regulator value, this is a common problem.

SOURCE: 2003 Chevy Impala Service Traction Sytem show on Dash

I can't answer the question about the gas fumes, but I had the same problem last year with the "Service Traction Sysytem" message and the Trac and ABS lights coming on in my Impala. Mine turned out to be because of a bad wheel bearing, that was causing the ABS and traction system not to work. I'm not sure if you've experienced this, but another thing that would happen with mine was that I would go to brake and have a hard time depressing the brake pedal, almost like it was pushing back. That is the point when the Trac and ABS lights came on.

neither one of these would cause gas to leak. sure it is not coolant ? if you think it is gas it is not safe to drive car as it could catch on fire. possible cause would be a leaking injector.

SOURCE: I smell gas in the interior of my chevy 2004

a fuel leak somewhere in your engine compartment. if you can't find it and fix it..get it fixed professionally ASAP! that can get dangerous very quickly. the leak is flowing into your ventalation system through the hood then up into the cowel vent at the base of your window. keep your vents closed and drive with your windows rolled down until its fixed.

SOURCE: bad smell in air vent chevy impala

It is not fixed by an aerosol or scent additive to the air in the cabin. It will only mask the smell for a period of time.

Your cause is the air filter for the A/C system. You can buy a new one at local auto stores.

To replace it, you will need to open your hood. On the passenger side of the car, look just under the windshield at the trim panel under the wipers. You will see several tabs holding down this particular side of the trim piece. Using a phillips head screwdriver, gently rotate the screw pieces out of the tab holder (if this doesn't get it, you'll need to use a small flat head in unison to apply pressure to the screw to come out). There are 3. Once these are removes, gently pull the hood rubber gasket seal up and place out of the way. Note: you won't need to remove it from the car, just enough to clear the trim piece. Remove the trim and you will see a filter. Remove the filter and replace. Installation of trim is reverse.

That will fix your mildew smell from the vents. This WILL NOT fix a mildew smell if caused by interior mildew.

Note: The directions to change this filter are also found in your Owner's Manual if you have it. It is a simple procedure and should take about 15 minutes if you are taking your time.

Thanks for the inquiry.

smell gas in the cabin Kenny, Fuel line is probably leaking, would have checked immediately by a qualified tech. This could be extremely dangerous if fuel is spraying/leaking on hot surface such as exhaust.

Check the front passenger side carpet and make sure it is dry. If it is wet, the heater core up under the dash is leaking, which is why you smell it in the cab.
