What about the rest of the shift points. 2 to 3 and 3 to 4? If the others are normal than the problem is with the 1-2 internals and not the T-V linkage.
It seems the transmission Is acting as if the throttle is wide open; for the 1-2 shift, therefore there is something in the linkage is broken or out of adjustment since your work. The last step before opening up the transmission to replace the TV linkage is to make sure the external TV cable linkage is set up right, and after is verified, if you are still seeing WOT upshift points that function of the internal to external kick down parts will need to be repaired. Sorry.
If you know a good local independent transmission specialist you might see him and get some advice.
First off there may be nothing wrong. At highway speed, the trans will shift down to 1st, but you won't feel it. If should feel like neutral. Does it shift normally when your "wide open throttle" from standstill? If it shifts properly in this situation, then your fine, don't worry. How about wide open throttle at say 25mph? how about 35 and 45? anything over that and its gonna feel like neutral. IF your convinced that your passing gear is not working right, it could mean that its out of adjustment, and needs a little more push, more throw, or kinda like adjusting the rod out a little bit further. Adjust your "passing gear linkage" or kickdown as you imply. Second guess would be low on transmisison fluid, filter, and last, the transmissoin control selonoid. Again I suggest its doing just fine, if it shifts down at any speed.
Shift modulator on the transmission may be bad, or clogged filter. Maybe time to changed oil and filter. Also a simple adjustment on the trans kickdown cable, or a new cable. The cable can stretch enough to cause a shifting problem.
put the torque converter on the gearshaft ans spin it to the right while pushing on it... it should slide back about 2-3 times.. youll know when its all the way on... the throttle doesnt have anything to do with your tranny... i think your refering to the kickdown cable.... leave it set like it is.. when your driving, and hit the gas hard, if it downshifts REAL early or doesnt seemto down shift thats when you need to adjust it to where it feel like it downshift right...
hope this helps
its looks to be behind the kickdown linkage. Let me look at my wife's car today. She has a '92 cougar with a v6. it will be late today when I get back to you.
Good job, Fixed my problem.
