I just purcgased a 1990 Lexus ls 400 and the coolant light came on it has a full tank of coolant is this a bad sessor or what?

It does sound like the sensor is either dirty inside the tank or bad. You will have to remove the overflow tank and the sensor is torward the bottom of the tank and easily replaced.
