4wd wont engage on my 1985 amc eagle
SOURCE: The belt keeps coming loose
You need to replace the alternator belt.they have a bolt which you loosen the belt. the belt probably got loose because this "tension" bolt was not properly tightened. the noise you hear is the belt slipping on the pullies. to replace it loosen the tension bolt until it is lose enough to remove the old belt. replace the belt with one of the same thickness and length. Be sure to tighten the bolt to where the belt will have about a 1/2 inch pressing down on it firmly with your thumb. you may have to remove some other components ( the fan for example) to replace the belt but thats questionable.

you need to put a chevy alternator with a built in regulator on it.
You need a 3 wire alternator. Two wires go to the battery and one wire goes to anything connected to the ignition switch.

The Gates Corporation,s website;

will help you identify which belts & hoses fit your vehicle, or any vehicle as long as you know what engine is in it!

SOURCE: i am looking for the manual for an 87 amc eagle
Go to faxonautoliterature. They carry dealer service manuals and have the manual you are looking for. As a matter of fact you can either get the manual for the whole car or one for the transmission only. I have used them before and had excellent service. Hope this helps.

Check oil level, the motor has to run.
Could be the oil pump in the gearbox.
Or the link for the gear selector out of adjustment.
Maybe a gearbox oil filter.
Good luck.
