The 4x4 will not work when i turn the switch from 2 hi to auto 4x4 or 4x4 high. it will engauge in low range is it the fuses, axle switch, transfer case motor, or is there a vacuum switch located elsewhere
SOURCE: 1995 gmc jimmy 4wd high not working
sounds like it is loosing vacuum check all the lines for a crack even the engine lines will cause it to loose vacc. pressure. if it is not run to the vacuum reserve canister you may not have enough vacc. to hold the actuator in several times I just run new lines and that helped and not very costly.

see my posting re this at my name: rlf107. $115 in parts and labor solved for me, on a 2000 Yukon XL

About 45% of all transmission problems are due to a defective battery, its components and the charging system. Make sure you have the correct battery in the vehicle and inspect all items relating to the charging system and the battery. The vehicle should charge between 13,5 to 14.5 volts. The condition of the belts is part of this inspection. If all of this is A-ok then get a scanner and pull the codes in the PCM.
Remember once light is illuminated for a item that item no longer works. Once you've gotton to this point let me know and I'll walk you threw it. Hopefully its just a weak or incorrect battery or something along those lines. Good luck and keep me posted
SOURCE: 1996 Yukon 4X4 Electronic Shift on Fly.
I had the same problem with the shift on the fly push-button 4x4 on my 97 Suburban. GM Shop manual indicates that it could be due to an encoder error on the actuator motor. Try pulling the transfer case fuse to reset the transfer case control module. Wait at least one minute. Re-install fuse then re-try operation. Did it last week and that saved me a trip to the dealership and extensive troubleshooting.
