Noise stops when I turn off the air conditioner. My husband thought it was the tensioner pulley and replaced it. That didn't work. I used a stethoscope on the compressor with the engine running. I didn't really hear the noise inside the compressor. Idler pulley maybe? The sound is definitely coming from the drive belt area. I'd rather that than the air compressor or pulley going bad. Much more expensive. Any advice?

Yes the idler pulley can make noise, but not very common. It can do it though.

probably the belt making noise , very common .
WHen a belt gets old it gets dry and cracks start to appear , the non-ribbed side of the belt may get dry & glazed also make noise . common problema are also tensioners that make the belt get out of line with the rest of the pulleys , look carefully because just a little miss-alignment can cause a belt to slip on the smooth side of pulleys and make noise . Misting water onto the belt may also help you determine what is making noise.
