Can I bypass the ac compressor with a smaller serpentine belt?

I know I can get a bypass pulley, but I think a smaller belt would be even easier. 1994 Olds 98 v6

I have a 1990 Olds 3.8 V6. Installed a 715k6 belt bypassing the frozen AC compressor using the stock belt routing. Working great.
Thanks for the above advice

SOURCE: pully on air compressor broke.

Yes, It will Work. Just make sure that the Place where you get the Belt will allow you to Return the Belt if it will not Fit. Sometimes you may need a Shorter or Longer Belt. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

SOURCE: Engine Belt

hi there it sounds to me that the bearings are going bad on your ac/c compressor

you can bypass it by getting a smaller belt
to get a size you can take a piece of string or rope and go around the remaining pulleys like alternator power steering and crank shaft then tie a know take it to napa and have them match as close as possible then install that belt this will solve your problem until you replace the compressor
the other way is go to a salvage yard look for you make and model without a/c there will be most likely a pulley and bracket in the place of the a/c compressor
take a picture of the set up and take the pulley off including the mount bolts and then remove th compressor on your car and install the pulley and you can use the same belt

No, due to the routing of the belt the compressor is needed.

SOURCE: A/C compressor pulley is seized and burning the serpentine belt

yeah its seized up[ and they dont make a repair kit for that one either. they have at most auto parts stores an ac bypass pulley . its a bracket and pulley so you can bypass the factory ac unit and still run the factory belt. but if you decide to change the ac unit there are 5 bolts holding the unit down .have the system evacuated.loosen belt and drop down out of your way. take the ac lines off the compressor and set aside . there are two bolts on top in front and there are 3 bolts in back on top tieing together a triangle shape mounting plate , take all 5 loose and out.disconnect ac wires (snap clip) lift , lightly pry off old ac unit.set aside and reverse the procedure to install your new or salvage yard ac unit. refrigerant chargers can be purchased from wall mart ( there cheaper) at $30. roughly 2 1/2 cans will completely fill the system just follow on label instructions. its all easy to do if you can use wrenches and have a little knowledge. and you get the satisfaction of doing it yourself. and save a bunch of $ along the way.

SOURCE: need diagram 1994 oldmobil 88 drive or serpentine belt diagram

Easiest way here is to get a paper and pencil
Make a drawing of all your pulleys with the crank on the bottom and Water pump above it, then all the rest of the pulleys . Not which ones have grooves and smooth sides. Now lay the is out in fron fo you and draw a lineat the bottom of the crank and go counter clockwise to about 12 o'clock then clockwise around the water pump and look to you right and see what could be next. My guess is the A/C, counterclockwise, then whats next, continue doing this until you get back to the starting poing of the crankshaft. You may have to try 2 different times, but I'm sure you will get it and compare it with the one Checkers gave you. It may be close in theory .

Can I bypass the ac pulley in my 03 Ford focus se 2.0 split port with the serpentine belt made for no ac pulley?

An easier fix. Check with your local parts store to see if Motormite/Dorman makes an AC Bypass pulley. It goes in place of your compressor and you don't have to change the belt routing.

Can i use a smaller serpentine belt if i bypass the air conditioning unit?

In some cases this can be done-but you do not mention the engine you have-also, there are bypass pullleys that some sellers have for just such circumstances, google bypass pulleys for your engine-you sometimes can do this yourself if you keep in mind the rotation of all pulleys has to remain the same,

Just had this exact same problem with my car. Sears Automotive said that it may just be simpler to get a smaller belt and bypass the compressor. Talked to someone at another store and they suggested the same thing instead of spending a ton of money to replace the compressor. So in short, yes and that is confirmed by two mechanics.

its the same. but a different pulley takes place of the a/c compressor. I know DORMAN makes a few "bypass pulleys" to do this, but dont know if they make one for your truck. at the worst... you will need to get a pulley and bracket from the dealer for a truck without a/c . as long as your a/c pulley bearing is ok, you can let the belt run there.

On a 2001 saab 93 turbo can can you bypass the ac compressor or is there a bypass pulley

You can bypass both the AC compressor and the middle serpentine idler pulley with a 6PK1790. The middle pulley is bypassed by running the belt straight line from the upper rear serpentine idler straight to the power steering pulley, then over the water pump (the smooth pulley powered by the back side of the belt) and down to the engine drive pulley (harmonic balancer), bypassing the AC compressor) This works fine. On 9.5 models, the same basic idea, but a slightly different sized belt.
